Southern Pine Beetle Eating Away fii County ..AS A! 1 .;!" v. l"fu- h. f V w- ft The Town Of Hertford, Just fro Improve things, Did Supplement Work To Power Lines Last Week FHALoans Still Available I jr,a"r mers( Home AfltHaistration announced today that funds for FmHA real estate and farm Mpiftating loans were rctly increased and will Ibew1 available for the rerjiJjfinder of this fiscal year ending June 30, 1973. V BfoHA State Director Jlaflls T. Johnson, reported thsl'lan additional 170 million fadCfcrs has been made available for loans to farm ers for annual .operating expenses, and for financing (purchases of farm equip ment, livestock and other capital needs on terms up to iven years. . These funds were made Jivaiteble to help fill the need rr operating money arising rpm the termination of the emergency loan program. Jfihnson said that as a result ot rains and flooding, both lat year and this year, $ Nbrth Carolina has about hall 4s counties eligible for eniergency loans and will receive a greater proportion of the available operating funds. He further stated that farmers who were con sidering purchases of farm equipment or livestock in the near future would be wise to consider these purchases before June 30, while funds are in adequate supply. . Johnson reported that funds for - long term real (estate loans for land pur chase, farm development, refinancing and other similar purposes were also adequate for the remainder of the fiscal year. These loans are at S per cent up to 40 year terms and have a maximum amount of $100,000. Both types of loans can be made to farmers for non farm enterprises such as adding a business & their farming enterprise or for recreational purposes. Many North Carolina farmers have found that ' non-farm businesses or recreational enterprises have added greatly to their farm income. Farmers Home Administration has assisted more farmers this year through their farm loan programs than in any other year, both in loans made and in dollar volume of total loans. All loan funds for these programs are provided by Farmers Home Administration through the insured loan program whereby the agency resells its notes to private investors. This provides a continuous source of funds without the use of federal government appropriated funds. Farmers interested in these loan programs should contact Melvin E. Howell, Farmers Home Administration, located in the Perquimans County Office Building in Hertford.' The Southern Pine Beetle. : one of the souths worst forest insect enemies, is eating . away in Perquimans county. ; A recent aerial survey made by Jthe ' N.C. i Forest Service picked up 15 spots of heavy infestations ' in , the county. . Many more hw festations have been noted from ground checks. The Southern Pine Beetle is a small insect which bores into old age, over crowded or weakened pines and lays eggs in the bark. The young larvae feed on the inner bark of tree girdling inner bark and spreading a fungi disease which helps kill the tree. The fungi disease, known as blue stain, hastens the death of tree and degrades the lumber. Depending on the time of year and severity of ' attacks the tree usually dies within a week or more. The beetle's life cycle is com pleted about every 25 days. There is no saving tree once beetles have infested. Many insects attack one tree and groups of trees amounting to several acres 4n size; As many as 200 or more insects per square foot of bark have been found in this area of the state. . . . The new generations of beetles often emerge from infested trees before they are completely, dead. As tree dries out the needles turn yellow and then brown. One way to tell if you have bark beetles in the early stages is to look for little white globs of turpentine on bark of tree, the tree will look like popcorn has been glued to the bark. On weakened trees the pitch tubes may be lacking. The most effective control measures at this time Is to salvage infested trees and trees within infested zone for pulpwood or saw timber. . By salvaging Infested area this eliminates the young larvae from hatching out and going to more pines. When trees are cut and utilized the larvae dry.up from lack of moisture. . If you have spots of dead or dying pines pleace contact County Forest Ransar lwa Stallings for assistance. The Forest Service will examine area, and if insects are present wilj mark buffer zone around infested area for control and help you find someone to salvage infested area in zone. The Southern Pine Beetle problem is a serious one. Your cooperation in the detection and control will be greatly appreciated. Sanitarians Attend Meet Forty northeastern North .
