By JIM TYLER :; Commercial '''p ' Fisheries ' The spring herring run is over in this wide river where thousands of fish can be caught each ,'ctaV and as the catch is tallied it looks like it I.will be the worst in 21 years. , i'The- Chowan has been in the news the last year L because of pollution and prolific algae; growth problems. Pollution has been named as a reason lor lack of fish this year. (Before the pollution problem, declining herring catches were attributed by some people to Russians and other foreign fishermen fishing close to North Carolina shores. And now, people are adding another possibility for Ismail catches this yeifoThis past winter and spring ,-hluefish along northern N.C. beaches were the "most l.ancj.biggest ever." Before the herring could get out of the ocean on their way to Chowan River and other f IrtShwater streams to spawn, they had to get through the blues. Bluefish are not known as bashful eaters. There is reasorf for concern about the low take of river herring this spring, but the fishery has a history of drastically lov years. The N.C. recorded catch this year will be less than seven million pounds. The 1972 reeerded catch was a bit more than 11 million. From flTOZ- until this year it varied from 11 to 20 million i' pounds annually, with the exception of 14. In 1964 it ! fell to 7.5 million. Records back in 1887 show the same pattern of sudden bad years. These figures mostly mean Chowan, because it has been by far the main t herring river, - i The state marine fisheries agency is trying to learn more about these fish that have been a colorful fruitful Apart of northern coastal history. Biologists are working the Chowan and other herring rivers to learn herring life history facts. Any person receiving a card should call the social security office if they have any questions. policy holders covered by Blue Cross-Blue Shield issued in the state have the right to choose the provider of the care or service in cluding chiropractic physicians, and shall be entitled to payment or reimbursement for such par and service. the First Annual North eastern North Carolina Junior Golf Tourney will be held at the Seascape Golf Club on June 7-8, 1973. Boys from the age of twelve up to eighteen years old may enter the tourney. Any boy that will become nineteen during the year 1973 is ineligible. The Dare County Jaycees will present trophies to the top three golfers from Currituck and Dare counties while the Elizabeth City Jaycees will do the same for the top , three from Pasquotank and Camden counties. The two clubs will combine to present a trophy to the overall champion of the tourney as well as a trophy to the winner of a putting contest that will be held during the two day event. The clubs will send the Dare County Jaycees champion and the Elizabeth City Jaycees champion to the North Carolina Jaycees Junior Golf Tournament later in the summer, since the champion of each club will be eligible to compete in the annual state event. Boys may pick up entry forms at the Seascape Golf Club or call Jim Crabtree at 441-5425 or 491-2490 and request a form. Young men that plan to enter from the Elizabeth City area should pick up a form at Reel Tire Company, Froggy's Sporting Goods or Call Jerry Allen at 335-0244 or 338-3981 and request; a form.
