lleraord Boy Text & Photos ; By Kathy Marren ' Hertford" Boy Scout Troop 155 returned to Hertford Saturday after a week at (Summer ' camp with medals, badges, and awards galore? The group spent the week at Pipsico Reservation near Surry, Va. The following scouts attending the camp: Jerry Chappell, David Perry, Tommy Harrell, Shelton Skinner, Tony Smith, Jeffery Vaughn, Linwood Spellman, Mark Pierce, Webb Haskett, Mike Goodwin, Randy Simmerson, Ted Applegate, Paul Applegate, and Edgar Lee Lane. Scoutmaster Will Simmerson and assistant Seymour Chappell journeyed along with the boys. . ' . While at the camp the troop won first place in open events of competition with ; the eight other troops. Hertford Troop 155 came out winners in all of the events. On Tuesday night, members of the troop won . the canoe races against all other groups. In a special race they beat the camp staff. For this they received an old boat paddle, which had this inscribed "The old gray paddle award, to Troop 155 7-24-73." Wednesday night turned out to be exciting when the group came out on top again in the Swamp Rump. This was an event in which the troops went into the swamp with lights to catch snakes and frogs for the nature inspector to use . Those troopers with the most snakes and frogs were Mike Goodwin, Mack Pierce, Hi) 4 Our Health by C. H. Tracy, MJ. . One ot my students has con. tracted ehlckennox, which I never had. In the Thursday night critter race, Shelton Skinner was top man when his turtle won 5 times in a row. David Perry's cricket won first place in that event. Also Thursday evening was a shoot out between the Scoutmasters and members of the camp staff. Hertford's representatives Will Simmerson Seymour Chappell won this event. Their award was a trophy made from a piece of cedar with empty shells drove in it forming a target and the number of the troop 155. . While at camp, the boys : earned 33 merit badges, 17 partial merit badges (these will be finished in the near future), and 21 skill awards. Webb Haskett was on top with 5 merit badges and 2 partial. Due to the troop's good showing they were called upon to open the Friday night campfire. This was planned and conducted by Senior Patrol Leader, Randy Simmerson and he was assisted by Mike Goodwin, and Mark Pierce. The troop was also awarded a steak supper " cooked by the staff before the Friday night campfire program. All other meals .were cooked by the boys 'themselves. Scoutmaster Simmerson reports that he has never , eaten better, nor has he ever been out with a group of boys who conducted themselves any better. The parents of all the boys as well .as - the entire community should be proud of the boys. As part of the expansion plan, George Lewis, manager of the Edenton Office, will assume overall responsibility for development of Agribusiness for the eastern segment of the bank's marketing area. Lewis, a Nash County native, joined Peoples Bank in 1950 as a Farm Manager. He was promoted to Farm Relations Officer in 1958 and manager of the bank's Edenton offices in August of 1968. A graduate of North Carolina State University, where he received a B.S. Degree in Agri Economics, Lewis is a past president of the Lions Club, Chairman of the Chowan County Planning Board and a former member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Active in the Methodist Church, Lewis has served as Chairman of the Board of Stewards, Treasurer, President of the Mens Club, Trustee and Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee. Lewis is married to the former Marion Cole of Raleigh. The Lewis' have two children, George W Jr. and Joan Marie.
