Perquimans Weekly Harvest Section, Thursday, August 9, 1973 Page 23 Farm Festival Was Planning And Working TEXT AND PHOTOS BY KATHY MARREN The John Corprew Family If you have been in a supermarket lately, you probably overheard housewives discussing the problem of ever-rising food prices. If you would talk to some of the county's young farmers and ranchers, you would find out rising prices are just as bad on them, and they are not the ones profiting from these outrageous prices. According to Mary Corprew, wife of young fanner Johnny Corprew," FUEL STORAGE The fuel shortage has increased interest in home storage of gasoline and other fuels. Stored fuels represent a highly dangerous potential haz ard. North Carolina State University extension specialists suggested that above-ground tanks be at least 40 feet from the nearest structure. An approved dry chemical fire extinguisher should be handy. CUT WASTE The sharply higher cost of livestock feed has placed a premium on the Farm Festival will help people understand, farm prices, and just what is involved expense-wise. High prices do effect the farmer. Everything is going up, such as combines, tractors, seeds, fertilizers, etc. And it is certainly not the farmer that is getting rich." But the family is happy with what they are doing. "If we didn't like farming, we wouldn't be doing it," said Johnny. Mary feels that it is good on the children that they are able to see more of their father, except during those times when a farmer pulls long hours. Sometimes, they are in the field from 5 a.m. till 9 p.m. The Corprew children are Melissa, 6; Melanie, 3; and Timothy, 2. During the Farm Festival, Johnny will be helping with the outdoor exhibits such as farm machinery. Mary will aid with the organizational booths.. Mary likes farming. She said, "I really like it, it's satisfying to work for yourself and be able to raise things." Billy feels that the festival will help promote better relations. "The farmer knows what it is like to be a farmer, but those people reducing feed wastage ou North Carolina farms. North Carolina State Uni versity extension swine specialists point out that a farmer who keeps 1,000 head of hogs on feed uses around 600 tons living in the city don't maybe we can help show them. Maybe we'll all learn something."'. Mary is hoping that the festival will be a lot like the centennial where the entire community will . work together. Besides being involved in her husband's work, Mary also enjoys her hobbies, which are gardening and needlepoint. She likes any kind of work in the yard. When " you're ,. a farmer's wife, you have to like the outdoors. You can tell Mary does by her garden, flowers, and the lovely yard surround the couples' brick home. Also, Mary teaches the Nursery class at Hertford : United Methodist Church, and Johnny is a member of the choir. He jokingly said, "Yes I do make a joyful noise. At least some people think so."
