Present Bond to continue. mmmmmmsmsmsji Session Several Many families , in rural Orange and Chatham counties have been uprooted by the New Hope Reservoir project. Homes and churches were razed and businesses forced to relocate or close. People left their farms for urban com munities or trailers. . Others stayed in the area and willingly or bitterly set out to restructure their lives. Com mon problems led to increased participation in community meetings. Soon, a documentary that examines the ways these rural people adapted to change will be offered to groups across the state. It also may be shown on WUNC-TV. Titled "Our Lands, Our Lives," the documentary was produced by Dr. Fritz Hafer of the University of North Carolina Department of Anthropology and Richard Doble of Apex, a graduate student in the University's Department of Radio, Television and Motion Pictures. It will offer, said Hafer, a chance for people in other communities to learn about the trauma of change, what it means and what can be done about it. "At first, some people didn't know they were able to organize or even entitled to organize. But they did come together effectively because of the reservoir. "Now, we can show others what happened to them. We can say, 'Here's what was going on and here's what they did. You can have the benefit of their experience." Hafer has been interested in the New Hope area for several ears as a citizen ana an Families Are Uprooted thropologist." His current project was funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities through the N.C. Committee on Continuing Education in the Humanities. The Endowment traditionally seeks to involve academic humanists in community affairs for other than research pur- Hafer said his work in the New Hope area did not change anybody's mind about the reservoir and was not intended to. .: Our effect was to give these people more of a sense of unity and consciousness of kind. And they got an awareness that what they do with their lives is an important thing and can have meaning far beyond the com munity. " . : He found the people receptive. "Once we explained what we were doing, they : were en thusiastic and interested. They W. Hafer and Doble worked in the New Hope area from January, 1972 to August of 1973. They attended meetings and talked with dozens of residents. Their grant paid for more than 1,000 photographs, nine hours of taped meetings and conversations, and the"ex tremely valuable" services of Mrs. Billie Rogers of Pittsboro, who worked as local coor- -dinator for the project and made arrangements for most of the meetings. Mrs. Rogers also edited a monthly newsletter that in formed residents of church, community and other meetings where their problems and decisions would be discussed. It also contained summaries of past meetings. Citizen participation in ;Mil By Chatham Dam creased. That goal, Hafer emphasized, was the main reason for his work in the area and the National Endowment's reason for supporting it Hafer gives the people themselves most of the credit for the increased participation in the community's problems. "We were a drop in the bucket to what they had going them selves. The fact that outsiders were there really meant something to them. They were overwhelmed with our attention and they said we were doing a great job. But they were doing it. "These people reached the rural whites and blacks who do not usually participate in these kinds of meetings. Their in terests usually are not represented."
