When not in the pulpit or making calls to the hospital for ill persons in the community, Rev. Mann likes to go fishing. However, he confessed he has only been twice since he's been here in Hertford. The hospitality and friendliness of the community has made it easier for the Manns to make visits in the homes of members of their congregations. Mrs . Mann said she is glad her husband is a minister "Since he selected his profession I can meet so many different people that I would not be able to under different circumstances," she said. When asked if a minister and his family were expected to be different and act differently from other people the Mann's agreed that not so many years ago a minister and his family were expected to be on a pedestal. But today they can be relaxed and be at ease. Mrs. Mann enjoys swapping recipes with neighbors and friends. Rev. Mann was asked about the trend of young people in the church. He says he sees a renewing interest in the church of the youth. He says the youth movement of the young people who have sought the feeling of faith outside the conventional church was and is for many reasons. He felt the young people sought this type of expression of faith because of the less burden of the do's and don'ts or organized religion. "Young people are just as religiously aware as they used to be. The church will once again be blessed with the involvement of young people working together. The church is beginning to take a second look at what the young people can contribute," Rev. Mann said. In past ten years there has been a lot of. concern with Christian social activity. This almost went to excess. It is now beginning to level off and (he church is viewing social actions as only one of the areas of involvement. We now need to be concerned with what the church needs," Rev. Mann : said. A daily routine for Rev. Mann goes something like this. In the morning he goes to his study to deal with the administrative responsi bilities. He writes his sermons, does his correspondence, and other things. In the afternoon he visits people who may be in the hospital, sick at home, or just people who he knows who may wish to talk with him. Sometimes there are funerals and weddings to serve. Since arriving in the community, Rev. Mann has officiated at 15 funerals and 13 weddings. On some evenings, when there are no church meetings or other obligations the family en joys being with each other. They play games,"" enjoy going to family movies, like to visit in Sanford with relatives, enjoy concerts and museums. Along about that time, a fellow by the name of Columbus stumbled on this new continent That's when it v all started. The English got Into the act about 100 -years later when Raleigh sent a bunch of colonists to Roanoak. (The folks back home never did hear from them.) Finally, a group did manage to hang on at Jamestown. . Since that time, things really moved, and Albemarle shared in the building of America in a most auspicious manner. It's no wonder we're so proud of Columbus, today. The Norfolk & Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Co. i ;' s t- busy schedule for some entertainment revolves around music. Bj Marion Swindell They say the word "lonely" was created and used for the first time by William Shakespeare. He has been dead for only 350 years, and what they used to describe "lonely" before his time, we don't know. We are sure people were "lonely" 400 years ago even though they didn't have a word for It. You would be surprised how many lonely people there are in the world today. We know a person who makes it a regular habit of calling up her friends on the telephone and saying: "I lust called because I felt you might be lonely." The remarkable thing is that the phone calls are a sure cure for her friend's loneliness as well as her own. - It might be a good idea If more people make a practice of this idea. There was a time in the experience of every person when he was not at peace with God. But through the atoning death of Jesus Christ on the Cross . peace has been secured for the whole world. Justification (right standing with God) comes when man makes the faith response to God's offer of grace in Jesus Christ. Man can never arrive at peace with God by his ow,n efforts or achievement. The prodigal son learned that one does not find satisfaction and contentment by changing his surroundings. Discontent is not a matter of where one lives. Peace, joy, and satisfaction come as the result of a personal relationship with God. By Jesus Christ we also have access by faith into God's amazing grace. The Greek words for "access" mean "to bring" and "facing." It was used of one person who brings another into the presence of a third party. Through our faith in Jesus Christ we enable Him to usher us into the .very presence of God. In God's Darden Department Store 109 111 N. Romans 5:3-5 The word for "tribulations" means pressure, distress, oppression. It is a pressing down or pressing together. These things are a part of the Christians life. Salvation mat comes as a gift of God"s grace makes it possible for the Christian to see good and to glory even in these "tribulations". God's salvation is more than a pie-in-the-sky-by-and-by. It is the kingdom of God within the believer here arid now. When tribulations come the Christian is able to turn them into patience (steadfastness, endurance). He is made able "to remain under" the pressures of life. "Experience" means approvedness. This approvedness produces and increases hope. This hope is not a wishful thinking but a hope that will not allow one to be put to shame. The love of God shed, abroad in the heart of a Christian is not the Christian's love for God. SALVATION, Romans 5:S-11 Thus for we have looked at the results or benefits of the proper relationship to God. How does an estranged, lost, , ungodly person come into this right relationship to God? First of all, one must recognize himself to be estranged from God. Paul speaks of "while we were yet sinners." There must have been something terribly wrong with us for the sacrifice of our sins was God's own Son. "Christ died for the ungodly" (6). "Christ dies for us" (8c). Verse 9 tells us that we "being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him." Verse 10 says "when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son. It is through Christ that we have now received atonement. The Cross of Jesus spans whatever distance there is between the sinner and God. Jesus lives today to save all who will come to God by him.
