Page 2-The Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, N. a, Thursday, February 21, 1974 ' Southern Pine Beetles Are Still Destroying North Carolina Trees I The worst outbreak of .Southern Pine Beetles in North Carolina since the 'early ; I960's continues to ; plague the state. According -to Perquimans County Forest Ranger Lewis Stallings, Southern Pine Beetle activity usually decreses during the winter months. "A sudden severe . cold snap will kill manv of the beetles, but those winter has been so warm that beetle activity has hardly slowed." Pine beetle infestations have been reported in 68 counties in the State with Gaston, Cleveland, Rutherford, and McDowell being hardest hit. As of the .end of December, there were 4600 spots of infested trees statewide, as com pared with 3400 spots last July. "The N. C. Forest Service located the tested areas during periodic aerial surveys, then notifies the landowner of the problem," according to Lewis Stallings. "If the landowner wishes, we will arrange to have infected trees removed by private operators and will mark the trees which must be cut. There are presently 10 or 12 active spots of Southern Pine Beetles in Perquimans County," according to Lewis Stallings. ; ' The major control effort continues to be the rapid removal of infested trees through salvage operations. Private pulpwood and sawlog operators normally perform this work, removing and using the infested wood as rapidly as possible. "Our wood using industries have been ex tremely cooperative' in giving priority to these salvage, operations," L. Stallings said. - During 1973, some 59,000 cords of pulpwood and 32 million board feet of timber were salvaged from trees killed by the Southern Pine Beetle in North Carolina. "Of this, cords and 64,800 board feet were salvaged in Perquimans County." Luke stallings said. , - . " The Southern Pine Beetle is about 3-16 of an inch long and attacks only pine trees. Many of the beetles attack a tree together, eating away at the vital cambium layer underneath the bark and creating a series of tunnels or galleries which girdle and ' kill the tree. Infested trees can be identified by all needles turning brown or red, or by the presence of pitch tubes which resemble popcorn on the outside of the bark. Once the Southern Pine Beetle attack a tree, the tree will die. By the time the needles turn brown, the beetles may have already moved to surrounding trees. This is why it is necessary to remove a buffer strip of seemingly healthy trees when salvaging a spot of beetle killed trees. Forest trees are not the only pines affected. Yard trees are Just as susceptible to attack. The outbreaks in Chapel Hill, Charotte, and Raleigh are good examples. Landowners are cautioned to be certain that the South ern - Beetle is positive ly identified before becom ing alarmed. Store cold cuts' in the refrigerator. Unopened vacuum-sealed packages may be kepi for two weeks. Once opened, wrap well and use within three to five days. After a jar of peanut butter has been opened it should be kept in ihe refrigerator, Remove it from the refrigerator a short time before using to allow it to soften.
