Officers Are Appointed t The Norfolk & Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Company and The Norfolk & Carolina Telephone Co. of ( J ' 1 I HONORED Rebecca Hurdle, a senior at Perquimans High School was recently notified that she is to be featured in the Eighth Annual Edition of Who's Who Among American High School Students, 1973-74, the largest student award publication in the nation. Students from over 20,000 public, private and parochial high schools throughout the country are recognized for their leadership in academics, athletics, activities or community service in the book. Less than 3 per cent ; of the junior and senior ' class students nation wide are awarded this recognition. Rebecca is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hurdle of Rt. 2, Hertford. She is active in the Beta Club, Health Club, Letter Club, Guidance Club, Chemistry Club, and is the Acteen Leader of her ; church. She is a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. In addition to having her biography published in the book, ' Rebecca will also be eligible to compete for one of ten scholarship awards of $500 to $1,000 funded by the publishers and will be invited to participate in the firm's annual "Survey of High Achievers" later in the academic year. Rebecca plans to at tend The College of The Albemarle upon graduation in June. Va. announced today that at their recent board meetings O.V. Hobbs was appointed superintendent Installation & Repair, and C.G. Castellow was ap pointed Outside Plant Consultant. The appointments were part of an overall restructuring within the companies which realigned departments and is designed to make the companies more responsive to the growing needs of their service areas. The companies, headquartered in Elizabeth City, serve over 35,000 stations in eight nor theastern North Carolina counties and over 11,000 stations in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, Va. Hobbs, 58, began with the companies in 1946 as a lineman and was, prior to his recent appointment, Elizabeth City supervisor Local Plant. A native of Elizabeth City, he attended the public schools of Great Bridge (now Chesapeake), Va., and was employed at the Norfolk, Va., Naval Shipyard during World War II. He is an elder and Sun day school superintendent at First Christian Church, a member of the Lions Club, and chambers of commerce of Elizabeth City and Hertford. He is married to the former Sadie Armstrong of Tyrrell County and has two married daughters. Castellow, 67, began with ; the companies as a lineman in 1925, served as foreman Construction & Main tenance for 23 years until his appointment in 1962 to Superintendent Outside Plant, a position he held until his recent ap pointment. A native of Colerain, he attended the public schools of Bertie County and has been with the companies since completion of his course of studies. Castellow is an elder and Sunday School teacher in First Christian Church. He is married to the former Annie Myrtle Goodwin and has three sons and two daughters, all married. Son; Wilbur Lamb Daughters: Blanche Lipscomb Madeline Ferrell 1 Despite gas shortage and sickness - 4-H'ers from the Wynnfork 4-H Club and the Roadrunner 4-H Club aided the county in its Heart Fund Drive. The group met Sunday afternoon at the : County Extension Office and dispersed over the entire county to solicit con tributions for the Heart Fund. The group met with excellent co-operation from the county, collecting a total of $330. The Bank of North Carolina, N.A. awarded a cash prize of $25 to the car collecting the most money. The prize was won by Clay Roberts son, of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roberts and . Richard Rogerson son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rogerson who collected a total of 59.75 alone. The Heart Fund Drive will continue Saturday, March 2, with an auction to be held at the Perquimans County Horse and Pony Club. Prizes have been donated from area mer chants and individuals in an effort to add to the amount already raised for the Heart Fund. ' PROMOTED - Miss Josephine Davis Towe of Richmond, Va. was promoted to special A laboratory technician at the Medical College of Virginia recently. She has been employed at MCV for the past six years. Prior to this she was a lab technician at Watts Hospital, Durham, and High Point Memorial Hospital. She is a 1959 graduate of Perquimans County High School, attended ECU, Green ville, for three and a half years, completed her studies in Laboratory Technology at Norfolk General Hospital, and is currently working on her B.S. Degree. Miss Towe is the daughter of Mr . and Mrs. Martin Towe of Hertford. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Mrs. W.T. Smith was honored Sunday at a dinner party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Stallings at Belvidere. The occasion was the 83rd birthday of their aunt. Other guests included Mrs. Odell Stallings and Miss Ethel Eason for the delicious dinner, and numerous relatives called during the afternoon.
