We act as an adult,' a child, or as a parent. The way we act is entirely up to us. These three courses are each important and neces sary. But most important is that we act the right way at the right time. In other words, we need to be adults at times and not children. There are times when we should act like cliildren-and we insist on iplaying the adult role. I Think for a minute be fore you act. Choose the kind of person you are going to be, and there will be less reasons for remorse. OUR THOUGHT TO REMEMBER: Give us the wisdom to be what we should be, not what we would like to be. WHEN THE SPIRIT FILLS A LIFE Acts 3:1-1: 4:31-37) It is said that when Saladin beheld the sword of Richard, 'the lion-hearted, he marveled that a weapon so ordinary could have wrought such mighty deeds. The brave Englishman bared his arm and said, "It was not the sword that did these things: it was the arm of Richard." It was the arm of God that fought the battles for Israel in Old Testament days. It mat tered little with God whether Gideon's army numbered one hundred or one thousand or one. God measures men; he doesn't count them. So it matters whether or not a man is filled with the Spirit of God. Condition of the Cripple, Acts 3: 1-6 Peter and John were on their way up to the temple at 3:00 o'clock in the afternoon. This was one of the set times for prayer. Peter and John were now followers of Christ but it was not necessary for them to discard all they had learned in Judaism. Prayer was still an essential part of their lives as Christians. Set places and times for prayer would prove to be a constant blessing to the people of God. A man who was crippled from birth had been carried by others and left at the gate of the temple to beg! He was brought here every day with the hope that worshippers at the temple would be more Darden Department Store 109 - 111 N. He, seeing Peter and John about to enter the temple, asked them to give him money. Peter fixed his gaze upon the beggar and said, "Look on us." Expecting to receive money, the beggar willingly turned his attention to them.. : Peter then spoke those words which have become so familiar to us, "Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In . . the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." The verses which follow tell the story of the miraculous healing of this , cripple. Peter took him by the hand and pulled him to his feet. This was not in order to strengthen his legs but to make strong his faith. This incident speaks to the church today. A disillusioned, discouraged, disabled world lies at the doors of the churches of our day. They know there must be something better for them but they don't know what it is. It is left to the Church to give them even better than they ask. Someone has pointed out that the church no longer must say, "Silver and gold have I none," for indeed her coffers are full. But then another goes on to say, "Neither can she say, rise up and walk." Courage of the Church, Acts 4:31-33 Peter preached to the crowds drawn by the miracle. His sermon in forms them that the miracle was done through the power and authority of Jesus PH. 426-5464 RL 4 Hertford OIL CO. I me ferquimani Weekly, Hertford, N. C, whom they have killed. He calls upon them to change their minds and attitudes toward God and receive , God's forgiveness and cleansing. The miracle was proof that Jesus Christ still , lived and would be working through His followers. This preaching of the resurrection brought per secution from the Sad ducees. Peter and John were jailed for the night, The next day they were released with the stern instructions not to preach or teach in the name of Jesus. Released from the authorities, Peter and John rejoin the other disciples. They prayed. They prayed not for safety but for courage. The place was shaken. God heard their prayers. They were filled with the Holy Spirit. They spoke the word of God with boldness. Could it be that herein lies the difference between that early church and our modern-day churches? What would happen today if Christians were filled with the Holy Spirit? This lesson should challenge the followers of Christ to pray and open their lives to the infilling of God's Spirit. The result of the Spirit-filled and Spirit controlled life is boldness. Boldness to witness in Jesus' name. Another result of the Spirit-filled life is shown in the unity of heart and soul of those who believed. Also their witnessing was ac companied by great power. Acts 4:34-37 -., : When the life is filled with , Christ through His Spirit, there is little room for self. ' One becomes concerned for his fellowman. The Christ centered life cannot be content to have all it needs i while others have less than , the necessities of life. The Spirit-filled life is the generous life. Wherever there was a need that need was met. Lands were sold if ' the needs called for such drastic action. One man (Barnabas) sold his farm and brought the money and laid it down at the feet of the apostles. Many needs await our dedication and commitment to Christ. There is one need that if met, would result in the solution to every problem we face. That need is for Christians to be filled with the Holy Spirit. BIBLE QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Why do we use the word "Gospel" in reference to the first four books of the New Testament? ANSWER: We know the name Gospel was applied to these books before the middle of the second century. Justin Martyr says: "The apostles, in the memoirs made by them, which are called . Gospels." The Greek word . rendered Gospel means "a good message", "good news", "glad tidings." 1 ii
