A Look , " Backward " JULY 1936 By VIRGINIA WHITE TRANSEAU " GROUND BROKEN ON TUESDAY FOR A NEW THEATRE: Ground was broken on Tuesday for the erection of Hertford's new ,'theatre and the excavation work is going rapidly for ward for the erection of the brick structure which will cost $20,000, according to the contractor, W.H. Crccs Street, Aiheboro, Hertford, N.C., Thursday, June 28, facing the alley from which the automobile was driven, not only saw the car as it was driven from the alley and around the corner in the direction of Elizabeth City, about 4 o'clock, but had previously seen a man, whom she describes as a young man, a Negro, come out of the alley and walk in the direction of the rear of Simon's Store, some time before. Mrs. Britt said she thought it all looked suspicious but she was very sick that night and she had no telephone through which to notify the authorities, but she said when she heard the bloodhounds around 5 o'clock, she realized her suspicions had not been groundless. WARD FAMILY MOVES IN WHEDBEE HOUSE: Dr. I. Alphonso Ward, formerly of Elizabeth City, who returned to Perquimans last winter to practice his profession after an absence of some years, has moved his family to Hertford this week. They are occupying the former home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Whedbee, on Church Street. Dr. Ward's family include himself and Mrs. Ward and four children, Miss Ruth Alice Ward, who was graduated from Meredity College in June, Alphonso, Jarvis and Marguerite, all high school students. The Ward's who lived at Belvidere before going to Elizabeth City, are will known in Perquimans where they have many friends. IN ROCKY MOUNT HOSPITAL: Miss Mary Elliott underwent an operation for appendicitis at the Park View Hospital in Rocky Mount on Monday. Her condition is reported as satisfactory.
