V Page 2-The Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, N.C, Thursday,, October Women Helping Women By KATHY NEWBERN "Women helping women'' ' ",'was a phrase heard often by '.the approximately women attending a meeting of the eastern area of the N.C. Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs Oct. 12-13. The meeting of the 33 eastern area BPW clubs was held at the Ramade Inn in New Bern, N.C. Hulda Wood, Billie Sloop . and Kathy Newbern at- ' tended the Saturday session ,.of the meeting representing - the Hertford BPW club. Ms. Wood is the president of the local chapter. The local BPW members ; 'attended the three workshops held on Satur- ' day. Membership was the ; ' subject of the first workshop headed by Kay Graybeal of Goldsboro, State BPW " Membership Chairman. She pointed out that there are '3,619 tar heel women in volved in BPW and the state boasts a total of six new clubs this year. Ms. Graybeal gave the workshop participants six " pointers on how to recruit new members ana rewin existing ones. The second workshop was presented by Christine . Vick, a past state BPW president from Durham. She spoke on three topics: "' professionalism, protocol, and parlimentary procedure. Ms. Vick, highlighted some important and often overlooked points ' brought out in Robert's Rules of Order, and passed out a condensed version of the rules. The third workshop, -focusing of program pat- terns, implementation, and ; projects, was headed by " Bettye Powell and Joetta Feezor. The panel - presentation stressed the importance of finance and public relations in con nection with BPW clubs?-' Three problems existing today were pointed out and local clubs were encouraged to include these in their programs and projects for the year. They were: sex ",; bias in children's books, the - need for more day care :. centers, and the plight of the woman prisoner. Also, four per cent of the total prison population is female. Nearly every woman attending the eastern area meeting wore a button which read "ERA yes". They were in reference to the proposed Equal Rights Amendment which was a much discussed topic. Participants were urged to take available pamphletts and brochures concerning KRA and to pass them on, At the Saturday luncheon, Rebecca Melvin, the 1974 BPW Young Careerist representing North Carolina. was guest speaker. Ms. Melvin, who is a bank employee, pointed out t he assets of the young careerist program and urged its continuance. HOME FROM BRAZIL Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Riddick, now of Surry, Va., spent the week-end with his mother, Mrs. Dora T. Riddick of Hertford. They are now home from Brazil were Riddick represented J. A.
