Hearing Tomorrow To Decide Social Services Perquimans Countians will have an opportunity tomorrow April 4, at 7:30 p.m. to help decide what social services should be provided by their Social Services Department. A public hearing will be , held on that date in the Courtroom of the Perquimans County Courthouse. Lester H. Simpson, chairman of the Perquimans County Board of Social Services, says that every citizen. and organization that is inf oroctoH in eomritoe tha " disabled, elderly, children and families should attend this meeting. New Federal legislation enacted by Congress and 'signed by, President Ford on January 4th, allows states Jim "Catfish" Hunter is making a "pitch" for North Carolina's fishing opportunities. . Hunter, a native of Hertford, is recognized as one of the finest pitchers to 'ever work on a big league mound. In the past, most services offered by county social services departments throughout North Carolina were specified by the federal government. This latest federal legislation known as Title XX is a part of the new federalism which allows state and local government to have more decision making authority in how federal funds are to be spent. This law allows North Carolina to offer more services to more people than ever before. Perquimans Countians can help determine the services needed to help meet these goals in our county by attending the hearing. Simpson says that for years we have complained about more and more federal control over our lives. He concludes that now we are being given some authority and that we need to accept the responsibility. American League's Cy Young Award. Fish Fry Planned The Perquimans County Jaycees have scheduled a fish fry to be held Saturday, April 5 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Harris Shopping Center in Hertford. Tickets, priced at $2 each, are still available and may be .obtained from any Jaycee member. Citizens Discuss Water Two meetings to discuss the proposal of a county wide water system have been scheduled. Monday, April 7, citizens of the Bethel Community are invited to attend the meeting at the Bethel Fire Department beginning at 7:30 p.m. ! Another such meeting to discuss the water system will be held for citizens of the Parkville Community on April 8 beginning at 8 p.m. at the Winfall Community Building. -lAny interested person is invited to attend these meetings. Margaret Knopf, Evelyn Modlin and Danny Meads. 1 County's Only Physician Arrested On Five Counts Perquimans County's only practicing physician, Dr. Robert B. Hodgson of Hertford, has been released under $5,000 bond after his arrest on five counts of illegal delivery of controlled substances. The five warrants were obtained by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) last Friday. The arrest was one in a series of drug-related arrests of physicians throughout the state recently. Perquimans County Sheriff Julian Broughton Former Killed DAVID ERIC BRANHOLM David Eric Branholm, 37, President of Bluefield W. Va. College of Evangelism was killed Sunday, March 23, when the plane he was piloting crashed near Washington, Indiana. He lived in Hertford until four years ago. Officials in Indiana said Branholm apparently died instantly when the single engine Pipier Commanche was forced down in a Tony Copeland A tte nds Legislative Session Tony Copeland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard M. Copeland of Rt. 2, Hertford, served as a delegate from the East Carolina University, North Carolina Student Legislature for the r 38th session, held in Raleigh, N.C. March 19 through 23. Tony served as one of East Carolina's' thirteen delegates in the NCSL House of Representatives. The main objective of the NCSL is for students of North Carolina colleges through research in committees, debate on both the Senate and House floors, individual delegation operations to gain valuable insight into the governmental ' operations that will prove useful in the """"I 'i n 11 jiuMdMB IN THE TEACHERS' LOUNCE While waiting for the final decision from the judges of the talent show, these members of the Perquimans Union Student Council presented a skit entitled, "The Teacher's Lounge". The students good naturedly mocked several of the faculty members. said that Dr. Hodgson did not charge for the items he dispensed, adding that "He gave some prescriptions without prior examination. I don't think this will have any effect on his being able to continue his practice." Broughton said that Hodgson seemed surprised when the SBI arrested him. The doctor, who is in his early 50's, came to Hertford in August of 1971 following a wide-range search by city and county officials and organizations to remedy an absence of physicians that had lasted four years. Hertford In Plane heavily wooded area by high winds. The wreckage was discovered about 20 miles from Washington at 1:00 P.M. Monday. Rescue workers spent several hours in reaching the plane to remove his body. Bluefield College of Evangelism spokesmen said Branholm had flown to Washington last week to conduct revival services. Sunday he flew to Indianapolis about 100 miles away, and was returning to Washington when the crash occurred There had been reports of thunderstorms and at least one small tornado in the Washington area Sunday afternoon. Branholm was named president of Bluefield College of Evangelism when the school was established four years ago. The college is sponsored by the Church of Christ. He was born in Tacoma, Washington, but was reared in Fairbanks, Alaska where he spent the first 19 years of his life. After graduating from high school in 1955. he future. The NCSL also gives students an opportunity through the writing and enacting - of bills into legislation to speak out on issues that confront the State and Nation. The Session was, high lighted with many social affairs and receptions. Chancellor Caldwell, of North Carolina State University held a reception for the delegates on the campass. A reception was held at the Holiday Inn for the NCSL delegates and members of the General Assembly. Attending the reception and banquet were Governor Holshouser, Li Governor Hunt, Secretary of State, Speaker of the House, The Attorney General and many other of North Hodgson had responded to an advertisement in the Journal of the American Medical Association telling of the county's need for a doctor. "He came to us highly recommended by the Fulton County Medical Association of East Point, Ga.," said Robert L. Stevenson, chairman of the Medical Committee of the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce. Hodgson was scheduled to be tried in District Court yesterday, April 2. Resident Crash attended the University of Alaska. He entered the Army in 1957 and served five years. During his Army Career, he graduated from the Army Aviation School, Parachute School, Non commissioned Officers Academy and Infantry Officers Candidate School. Prior to accepting a commission, Branholm served two years in the 82nd. Airborne Division as a paratrooper. He was released from active duty in 1962 as infantry company commander with the rank of first lieutenant. Following his release from service and prior to entering Bible College, he was an executive for an aerospace corporation. He held a commercial pilot's license with multi-engine rating. While residing in Monterey, California, he attended Monterey Peninsula College and completed his formal training at Roanoke Bible College in Elizabeth City where he was graduated magne cum laude in 1967. DEMOS TO MEET Perquimans County Democratic Party will have a meeting April 3 at 8 p.m. in the courthouse in Hertford. All Democrats are urged to please be present. COOK-OUT PLANNED ' Perquimans Lodge No. 106 will have a steak cook out April 4, at 7 p.m. at Jim Bass' cottage at White Hat.
