The group performed' some old North Carolina favorites in a tribute to the good old North State. The Jumping Jills from Hertford Grammar School got the lunchroom rocking during the Appreciation Luncheon with their cheers for S-C-H-OO-L and their hallelujahs for the end of school. 4 '. "' I i "A M June 1837 By VIRGINIA WRITS TRANSSAU MASS MEETING AT COURTHOUSE TONIGHT TO ORGANIZE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: The interested citizens of the town are called to meet Friday night at the courthouse for the purpose of organizing a chamber of commerce. The Rotary Club, which is responsible for - the, movement, ;. is making an attempt to interest others in the town in the proposed organization. Dr. C.A. Davenport, president of the Hertford Rotary Club, appointed each Rotarian a committee of one to bring two others to the meeting and asked that each member talk to as many others about the proposed plan as possible. Dr. Davenport, in announcing his intention of naming a committee, stated that there had been a number of attempts to organize a chamber of commerce here, -but that he saw no reason why it shouldn't be attempted again. ' Graduates . From Spelman . . Pamela Lynette Beamon of Hertford received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Spelman .College in Atlanta, Ga. during commencement exercises held May 18. . " . D.S. Dempsey, pastor of the church officiating. Mrs. J.E. White, organist of the church, IN SAUDIA ARABIA - Carlton A. Davenport of Houston, Texas and son of ' Mrs. C.A. Davenport of Hertford and the late Dr. C.A. Davenport is representing Araban American Oil Company in Saudia Arabia. ' . . RETIRING During the appreciation Luncheon, county school superintendent C.C. Walter (left) recognized retiring school personnel and presented them with a gift of appreciation. Retiring (1. to r.) are Dewey Newby, Hazel Beaman and Clara Schofield. Although retiring, Newby will be working with the ESEA Title I program next year. Perquimans County Schools: BOARD CHAIRMAN Clifford Winslow, chairman of the county Board of Education was on hand for a few remarks ': -during the appreciation Luncheon which was sponsored by the board. Winslow expressed the pride he felt in the success of the school year. (Staff Photos by Kathy Newbern) First ippreciation Luncheon Held By KATHY NEWBERN Lat Friday was the day for another first in Perquimans .County, The county Board of Education sponsored an Appreciation Luncheon for all school personnel and supporting- auxiliary personnel as an expression of their thanks for a suc cessful year. Ms. Thelma Elliott, board member, extended a warm welcome to those in attendance and " was followed by Board Chairman Clifford .Winslow with the invocation. ! ' ; Following a delicious school family in a graceful luncheon prepared by school ballet number. V food services personnel, the -.; A Singalong Gang made group enjoyed the talent of . members of the Perquimans County school "family." First on the entertainment agenda were members of the faculty and staff . of Perquimans Central School. The newly : formed singing "Rockettes" paid tribute to North Carolina's Bicentennial year with renditions of such favorites as "The Old North State" ; and "Carolina Moon." "The Ballet Twins" from Perquimans High School, up of the faculty and staff from Perquimans Union School kept up with the entertainment pace with two favorites, "Born Free" and "Let There Be Peace On Earth." Last on the agenda, but far from least as the old cliche goes, were the "Singing Jumping Jills"s from. Hertford Grammar School. Their talent induced a poem by Mrs. R.S.
