C, Thursday, October 23, 1975 Letters From Our Readers : Editor's Mailbag Let The People Know TO THE EDITOR: . ,, I hope everyone will have the opportunity to personally welcome Mr. Jim Robinson to Perquimans County, and wish him much luck and success in his new position. I understand his title is full-time manager of the Chamber of Commerce according to the Perquimans Weekly. That s all fine and dandy, if it were so. . . , I believe when county money is supporting a salary and expenses, the people have a right to know . The county voted on and passed an industrial tax in 1965. My understanding is the County Commissioners voted to support half salary plus travel expenses (using industrial tax money) jointly with the Chamber of Commerce sup porting half the salary for this new position. 1 may not agree with the joining of these two programs fine - everyone does not agree to what they think is best for the county. However, the important issue is that the people know the matters being discussed and what's happening ' concerning the town and county. The best way, in my opinion, would be to have a person from the County Commissioners and a person from the Town Council responsible for writing an article f or the Per- quimans Weekly, at least once a month. That would be the best way to reach the people. After all, people elected local officials and should know the "goings on". KITTY BROWN 508 PENNSYLVANIA AVE. HERTFORD, N.C. Presidential Primary TO THE EDITOR: . , The Presidential primary in North Carolina is a few mon ths hence. There is a strong possibility that former gover nor Ronald Reagan will challenge President Ford. While a husband and father cannot be held entirely responsible for what transpires within his household, Presi dent Ford's wife, Betty, has given poor advice to our young people, and the President's son admits to smoking mari juana. We do not need such as this in the White House. President Ford is probably a good man, but I believe Ronald Reagan offers a superior alternative. Conservatives and moderates of both parties should give Reagan strong consideration. BOBBY SIMPSON NEWTON GROVE, N.C. Priority Is Needed Lunch Menus For Oct. 27-31 Taking A Look Backward - Rnuntroe Adrian Smith Jl TO THE EDITOR: Recently a five-year old child was admitted to my service at Martin General Hospital, Williamston, N.C. because of advanced liver failure. His body was cadaverous. His features were bird-like. Death appeared imminent. Acting out of frustration and futility I left the order: "Connect the patient immediately to the artificial liver machine! Before I could leave the hospital, the nurse in charge on the floor came running after me and inquired, "Where is the artificial liver machine?" I replied, "I don't know where it is." A few hours later the patient died. I often wonder, "Where was the artificial liver machine? Was it sacrificed for Viet Nam? Was it on a space ship headed toward Mars? Did the Russians get it via detente?' I concluded: "The artificial liver machine's non-existence . could be explained by a thousand different causes!" Liver disease in America is bad and it is getting worse. One out of every 14 people will suffer some form of it this year. It has become the third leading medical killer of adult Americans; people over age 25. The number one medical killer is heart disease. Last year the American Heart Foundation spent 50 million dollars on research. The number two medical killer is cancer. Last year the American Cancer1 Society spent 48 million dollars on research. The number three medical killer is liver disease. Last year the American Hepatic Foundation financed by a few private citizens, had only $13,133 to spend on all aspects of its research and educational programs. Obviously more priority needs to be given to liver disease research. MARTEL J. DAILEY, M.D. Secretary-Treasurer ' American Hepatic Foundation -P.O. Box 1005 i Williamston, N.C.
