All interested parents and citizens are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion. All members and their families are invited to attend. Commander Applegate has asked that as many members be present as possible. Membership and the turkey shoot will be on the agenda. The American Legion Auxiliary of Post 126 will meet at the Legion Home for a covered dish supper. All old and new members are invited to attend. Auxiliary dues will be collected at this time. Cox is unopposed in his reelection bid. Presently he is working full time as Town Manager . - but has been a businessman in Hertford for 25 years. The 54-year-old mayor ' is married and has ' two daughters. He is an active member of the First United Methodist Church. He is also vice-chairman of the ; s Albemarle Association , of Xk Counties and Towns, is a v member of the American Legion Post 126 and the ; Chamber of Commerce Board of Directdrs. Cox also j serves as a member of the Foard of Directors of the lbemarle Regional I -r.irg and Development C. - .' -ion, the Albemarle Area Development Association and the Economic Improvement Center. In seeking the post unopposed Cox said, "I wish to thank the people of Hertford for the cooperation and support they have given me the four years I have served as Mayor of Hertford." "I feel that Hertford is showing ' many signs of progress. It is my desire to be part of this and have a hand in helping it to happen. Progress will not come . without the support and , cooperation of everyone. We will never be the biggest but let us work towards being the best place to live, a place where we can look to with pride. ' ' Mattie Relfe "Pete" Broughton enters the , political arena for the first ' time with the upcoming town elections. A life-long Perquimans resident, Broughton is seeking one of the two council posts. She was assistant tpwn Biology Club float, the Student Council float, a float by the 4-H clubs, and the Perquimans Union School cheerleaders. Woodland Clinic Is Held Here The fourteenth annual Future Farmers of America Woodland Clinic was held Thursday, October 16th on the Skinner Farm near Holiday Island in Perquimans County. Five high schools in the area participated in the event. The woodland clinic is sponsored annually by the Albemarle Soil and Water Conservation Districts with the cooperation of the vocational agriculture teachers, the N.C. Forest Service, Union Camp Corporation and Jones Lumber Company. The F.F.A. team from Northeastern in Elizabeth City, won first place, the Perquimans County team placed second, and Chowan High School from Edenton was third. Other schools competing were Holmes from Edenton and Knapp from Currituck. Town Of PETE BROUGHTON clerk for 13 years and served under three mayors as secretary from i960 to 1973. She presently works at the Hertford Savings and Loan. As for qualifications for the job Mrs. Broughton states, "I have a comprehensive understanding of the administrative procedures such as the bookkeeping System,, budget, payroll, taxes, and utilities, of Hertford." She also is "aware of the responsibilities of the mayor, town manager, town council, and the required functions of the many departments that make up municipal government. ' Mrs. Broughton promises "always to act in the best interest of the citizens." ' ' fc: : -. "JfjP . . . -a, The first place team received a $25 award, second place $18 and thiw place $12, The individual high scorer in the contest was Arnold Parker from Northeastern High School. The objective of the contest is to stimulate interest in forestry as an intergral part of a course in Vocational Agriculture and as a profession; to develop reasonable abilities necessary in managing forests, and to develop reasonable skills needed in the application of the principle of managing, measuring and marketing forest products. The contest consists of four events. Each boy competes in events which test his skill in sawtimber estimation, pulpwood estimation, timber marking and tree identification. Hertford- Town T BILLYWINSLOW Billy L. Winslow is a candidate for re-election as a Council Member of the Town of Hertford. He was first elected to a four year term in 1971. Billy has been employed with Winslow Oil Company, Inc. in Hertford for 21 years. He is married to the former Janice Perry, who is employed with Perquimans County Schools as an Attendance Counselor. They are the parents of three children Cindy Winslow Bunch, an Art Teacher with Tyrrell County Schools, and two sons Tony Winslow, who is an employee of First Colony Farms as a Draftsman, and Clark ' Winslow, who is a Freshman at Chowan College majoring in Art. v Cox, clowns, the Belvidere and Hertford Fire Departments, the Belvidere Fire Dept. Queen, the high school football players, high school cheerleaders, the Citizens Unite For The Improvement Of Reading A Perquimans County Citizen's Task Force on Reading has been formed and the group held its first organizational meeting on October 22 under the ! Don Juan Sets Up Charities Fund Don Juan Manufacturing Corporation, located in Hertford, has organized an effort called the Don Juan Charities Fund. With over 80 per cent participation of plant employees, the drive is successful. Those participating donate a portion of their pay check once a month for three 4 Non - Council Candidates Billy is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hertford. He is crrently serving as Sunday School Superintendent, a position he has held for the past 7 years. He is also a member of the Council on Ministries, and The Administrative Board. He is currently serving as a member of the Hertford Post Office Citizens Advisory Committee and Trustee for the Town of Hertfords' Employees' Pension Plan Trust. Billy's interest in Youth Activities has been shown through coaching little League and Pony League baseball teams and other recreational activities. He has also been a member of the Perquimans County Rescue Squad. . Billy.'s statement concerning the coming election is: "I am very interested in facilities and activities being made available for the Youth of our City. I want the opportunity to continue to strive for improvement in our City government, hew industry, and better housing and beaufication of our town. I would greatly ' appreciate your support in the coming election, and if direction of Mrs. Francis Monds, chairman. Mrs. Monds reviewed some of the statewide plans of the improved reading effort with the group. Prior to this, V1- i ' n.:o';: ' months. The funds totaling over $1300 will be divided among a list of charities with checks being sent to the groups during the early part of January. The largest amount of funds will be given to the Cancer Foundation and the Heart Fund and 13 other charities will receive equal amounts. JESSE HARRIS Jesse Harris, incumbent town councilman, states hi: feeling on some issues con cerning the town's opera tion. "The most important item affecting all of us is the mon thly utility bill. VEPCO is largely responsible for this bill being so high. I shall do all I can to keep this bill as low as possible." "I would like to see the an nexation of the following area to Hertford: beginning at the county road close to White's Bar-B-Q and runn ing to the Center Hill road at Nixon's farm and then back into Hertford. (Newbern photos) she attended a planning conference held in Elizabeth City and the Governor's Conference on Reading held in Winston-Salem, N.C. The purpose of the reading task force is to make the total community more aware of reading concerns and to identify some possible community type projects to help in the accomplishment of this goal. These projects will not be limited to the public schools, but will also include the total community such as the public library and civic organizations. The task force will meet once each month and at the next meeting, members will be discussing ideas of possible projects for the schools and community. Members of Citizens United for the Improvement Mini Library- A mini instructional materials center library has been started at the Board of Education Office. The materials are on permanent loan for the Regional Educa tion Library in Grifton, N.C. OFFICE TO BE CLOSED The License Bureau at Hertford will be closed all day Wednesday, Nov. 5. Office hours will resume at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6. The License Manager has to attend a license meeting in Williamston. Richard is also a newly elected member of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Bryant makes this statement concerning the election. "I am seeking a seat on the Winfall Town Council because of a genuine interest in our town and its people. Even though Winfall is a small town, our people have the same needs as those in the largest cities. As most of you know, I am a public employee, but since this is a non-partisan election, we are permitted to run in elections."
