Perquimans County Horse & Pony Club This week, the Civic Club Spotlight focuses on the Perquimans County Horse and Pony Club, a unique organization that involves the . entire family in its activities. The club was chartered in 1967 with the help of Pete Thompson, Perquimans County Farm Agent at the time and Calvin Chappell, then president of the Albemarle Horse and Pony Club. The club was founded to operate recreational facilities for horsemanship, horse and pony riding and horse shows for pleasure and recreation. Present club member who were members when the club was first formed are the Robert Sutton, Melvin Forehand and C.T. Rogerson Jr. families. A horse show ring was built on the Willie Ainsley farm on the Hertford Edenton Highway. The ring was there about two years and was then moved two miles west of Hertford on the Preston Nixon farm un til 1974. The ring was then re located to its present site on the Joseph Perry Jr. farm. The 1975 membership was 30 families. The membership is based on individual families and not the number of family members, so actually about 100 adults and children in the Albemarle area are involved in the Perquimans County Horse and Pony Club. Several local club members belong to the American Quarter Horse Association and the North Carolina Horse Council. Donna Stallings, Sandy Weeks, Shirley Jones, Denise Harrell, and Eddie Fowler are members of 4-H. Also, there were several members who took part in the Mid-Winter Horse Show in Raleigh for the last three years. The activities of the club include a monthly horse . show from April to WE CLEAN AND REPAIR RADIATORS. TURN BR AKE DRUMS. The club has also assisted 4-Her's with their local and district 4-H shows. Theclubconcludes their year with an annual family Christmas Party. This year, high point trophies were awarded to the individual member with the highest total points in each class. Club expenses are paid by membership dues, con cession stand profits and horse show entry fees. Donations have been made by interested citizens in the area and many merchants in the Albemarle have sponsored several holiday horse shows. Regular membership meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at the club house located on the show grounds. Membership is $10 each year per family and there is no age limit. Prospective members must be voted in by the club. - Current officers of the Perquimans County Horse and Pony Club include Fleetwood Harrell, president; Tommy Stallings, vice-president; Thelma Rogerson, iAWt WtroT Inn 24x44 FT.
