JOINS OCCIDENTAL LIFE James Jordan Bonner has joined Occidental Life Insurance Company of North Carolina as supervisor of field communications. He was previously associated with Long Mfg. N.C. Inc.' as manager of marketing services. A native of Hertford, Bonner is a graduate of North Carolina State University, where he received a B. A. Degree in sociology and studied three years in the school of design. Occidental Life of North Carolina, a Raleigh based insurer, operates throughout the country, Puerto Rico and Europe. Perquimans County Citizens Band Club will meet at 8 p.m. at the Municipal Bldg. in Hertford. , , The William Paul Stallings Post 126 American Legion will hold the regular monthly meeting, at the Post home at 8 p.m. A "Dutch" steak dinner will be served at 6:30 with the Auxiliary members as special guests. Any member who plans to attend Is asked to call J. W. Dillon if he has not done so. Post 126 has just completed the most successful membership campaign it has ever had. Membership Chairman, Sheriff Broughton has reported a 1976 membership of 264. Commander Applegate has re quested a good attendance for Thursday's dinner-meeting. Perquimans Citizens v. also passed the bond for Higher Education by a vote NoPref. 6 11 . 16 3 6 3 4 0 Ford Receives Grant The EIC, Inc. has been awarded a combined grant of approximately $40,000.00 from the Community Ser vices Administration Office and State Economic Op portunity Office to conduct a Home Winterization Pro ject for Region "R". The Home Winterization -"Project will focus upou-the"; elderly, ihandcapped and low-income families who are affected by the high cost of fuel and the impact of cold weather due to cold air infiltration in the home. The EIC, Inc. Home Winterization will include the replacement of broken windows, minor roof repairs, weatherstripping of doors, increased attic in sulation, siding repairs and in some cases underpinn ing. : Winterization work crews, under the supervi sion of skilled carpenters, will determine the extent of needed . repairs and make the actual repairs to the -home. All supplies and building materials will be provided by the agency. A Regional Winterization Advisory Committee has been organized to monitor the project and to recom mend priority families for program participation. Applications for par ticipation may be acquired at any county Economic Resource Center or the EIC Administrative Office in Elizabeth City, or Edenton, N.C. SCHOLARSHIPS High school musicians will have the opportunity to compete for six scholar ships, valued at $500 each, offered by Chowan Col lege's department of music. ' The $500 scholarship covers two years of study at Chowan.i Two each will be offered in ' keyboard, voice and band-orchestra, according to Dr. .James Chamblee, chairman of Chowan's fine arts depart ment. . -, Auditions for the music scholarships will be held Saturday, ? Y ,.. . 373 . rN Jl's ' J u ft KENNETH RAY BOYCE Boyce Pitches Perfect Game The Perquimans High Pirates have gotten off to a good start in their baseball season winning their first game played last Friday in Knapp. The excitement of their first victory was doubled by the excitement of making their first game a truly spectacular one. The Pirates leading pitcher, Kenneth Ray Boyce, pitched a perfect game against the Knapp Knights allowing no runs, no hits, and no walks. Boyce is the nephew of baseball great Jimmy "Catfish" Hunter, ace pitcher for the NeW York Student Scottie Winslow, member of Betty B. Dixon's fifth grade, has been selected Student of the Week by the teachers : at Chowan Academy, v 'y-,. o. Perquimans scored their only run during the fifth inning. Tony Jordan tripled and Kenneth Ray Boyce singled allowing Jordan to score. Leading hitters in Friday's game were Kenneth Ray Boyce with three hits, Tosh Towe with two, and Wayne Baker, Matt Miller and Tony Jordan with one each. With this being their opening game, the Pirates now have a one win and no loss record. The Pirates are coached by Pete Hunter. Scorekeeper is Scott Tilley. (Newbern photo) Brenda Hollowell Selected As BPW Young Careerist Suzy Stanton, President of the Hertford Business and Professional Women's Club, has announced the club's selection for their 1976 Young Careerist. She is Brenda Hollowell, art in structor at Perquimans County High School. Ms. Hollowell is a native of Rich Square in Northampton County and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V.G. Chappell of that city. She is married to Bob by Hollowell and the couple reside at Rt. 4, Hertford. The art teacher received her Associate in Arts degree from Peace College in Raleigh and her B.S. degree from Meredith where she majored in art education. Prior to coming to Perquimans County, she was employed in Raleigh Classes Planned The Citizens United for the Improvement of Reading in '76 in Per quimans County will soon begin reading classes for adults using the Laubach method which simplifies the learning of reading greatly. Anyone in terested in attending the classes or helping in teaching should call Mrs. R.S. Monds at 426-5548 or Mrs. Crawford at 426 7483. In order to plan the classes, the citizens group needs to know how many would be in terested. Classes will begin soon after Easter and will include about eight sessions. Dates and details will be announced later. RECEIVE CERTIFICATION AS EMTS Several members of the Perquimans County Rescue Squad and Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary recently completed the 81-hour Emergency Medical Technician course taught by instructor Manna Massey. She has also taught reading at Perquimans Central Grammar School and is currently teaching at PCHS. Ms. Hollowell said she was both surprised and very honored at being selected by the local club. She will represent the Hert ford BPW Club at District Competition to be held May 1 in Williamston, N.C. The district winner goes on to state competition and the state winner will compete on a national level. Ms. Hollowell added, "I hope that I will be able to repre sent our county well." The Young Careerist pro gram was started in 1964 by the National Federation of Business and Profes sional Women's clubs. It is set up so that the local clubs, annually select a COMPLETES EMT COURSE - Marsha Massey, EMT instructor, presents an Emergency Medical Technician certificate to Emmett Landing who recently completed the course. Also present when the certificates, were presented was Paul Graeter, Regional Coordinator of the Emergency Medical Services office. Graeter offered his congratulation to each of the newly certified EMT's. MU Needs Recyclable Aluminum The Perquimans County Marching Unit girls would like to ask the help of the citizens of Perquimans County in collecting aluminum to be sold to app ly to the balance due on the activity bus. The buyers will accept T.V. trpys, aluminum pie pans, any drink cans that are aluminum and any clean aluminum foil. If the can or etc. will not stick to a magnet it is aluminum. There will be a truck at The Harris Shopping Center May 29, from ten until four to collect this from anyone who will save it for the girls. An adult will be there to assist with this during the time of col lection. If there is anyone who would like for this to be picked up from their home please contact either Mrs. Paul Byrum, phone 297-2447 or Mrs. Betty Swindell, phone 426-5614 and they will see that this is done. There is a balance of $2400.00 left to pay on the bus that was purchased last year. The girls are willing to work to be able to hurry and pay this amount due. The program is an effort to encourage young women to demand ex cellence in their selected careers and to become more involved in their respective communities through the competition.
