Page 2-Tht Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, N.C., Thursday, April t, 1976 Looking Backward APRIL 1938 By VIRGINIA WHITE TRANSEAU HISTORY CONSCIOUS CITIZENS PLANNING REMOVAL HARVEYS OR RESTORATION OF GRAVES: Whether the two and a half century old Harvey graveyard in the Harvey's Neck section of Perquimans County will be restored or whether the body of Gov. Thomas Harvey and those of the others of the line who are lying in a. neglected spot in the woods close to the shore of the Albemarle Sound will be brought to Hertford, has not been decided. But plans are under way either to bring the bodies to Hertford in the near future and place them in the Harvey plot in Holy Trinity Churchyard, where numerous of their descendents lie, or to restore the burying ground near the spot where the family lived on the Sound, and where the bodies have lain for so many years. COMMITTEE FROM THE TOWN CRIERS URGE FLAG DECORA TION: At least one of the committees appointed at the meeting of the Town Criers on Friday night has gone to work. J.G Rober son, who is chairman of the planning committee, has had a meeting with the other members of his com mittee, which includes Dr. C.A. . Davenport, B.C. Berry, Corbin Dozier and CP. Morris, and they ex pect to see sockets placed on the sidewalks of the business section of the town for placing flags. BIRTH ANNOUNCE MENT: Born to Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Baker, Hertford, Rt. 2, on March 23, a son. A CANDIDATE: A. Lin wood Skinner, who today announces his candidacy for the office of Represen tative of Perquimans Coun ty. Mr. Skinner, who is a salesman for J.C. Blan chard & Co., is a native of Perquimans. He is 33 years old and has lived in Hert ford all of his life. CHEWING THE RAG, Chowan Academy Announces Opening Registration School Year WITH LUCIUS BLAN CHARD, Jr.: A feminine voice called Vivian Mathews on. the telephone the other afternoon and asked if his service station is on the highway. "Yes, Ma'am," answered the pro prietor, of Bill and Viv's and assured the voice that his station was in fact, on U.S. Highway 17. "You'd better move it-there's a car coming," cracked the jokester. Viv still doesn't know who was on the other end of the phone. WATER SNAKES OUT EARLY: Water snakes are out early this spring. Lit tleton Gibbs, Jim Bob White, William White and Beverly Blanchard killed 15 Tuesday afternoon within one mile of Hertford. They said they saw 40 snakes; maybe moccasins, they weren't sure of the breed, and all of them were killed between Crow Point and Skinner's Creek Bridge. Zion Church Pastor's Aid Board will present the Elizabeth City State University Choir in concert on Sunday, April 4, at Per quimans High School. The time will be 3 p.m. The choir is composed of 56 students who have presented concerts throughout the United States, Europe, and the Bahamas. A special invitation is ex tended to all Perquimans County residents. SPECIAL GUESTS The "Travelers," of Elizabeth City will be at Bethany United Methodist Church in Belvidere on Saturday, April 3 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Rev. Daniel Forbes invites the public to attend. These tin cans had been collected by the school children, who are competing for that cash prize Miss Gladys Hamrick has offered to the child who gathers the largest number of tin cans and takes them to the school house during the period before April 30, There were four cart loads of the cans. They had been gathered from back yards, along the river shore, in trash piles; in fact, wherever . one could be found. . SAW THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS: Among the Hertford people who went up to Washington to see the cherry blossoms during the weekend were Postmaster and Mrs. J.E. Morris and their two children, Pat and John, and Mr. and Mrs. E. McM. Newby. Also Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Skinner and Mr. and Mrs. D.F. Reed. They were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Newbold. The following students are from Perquimans County: Cynthia Norman, Charlie Harrell, Velera Knight and Jean Lowe Banks. We would like to thank each and every person who remembered us so kindly during the illness and death of our beloved husband, father. and grandfather. Each card. call, visit and prayer meant so much to us. The beautiful flowers and delicious UmhI were greatly appreciated. All the many kindnesses extended will always be remembered.
