ANIMATION APPROACH Andrell Henry works with Head Start students using the Toby Theater and racing set. Henry is an audiologlst and pathologist working with the programParents with children between the ages of four and five can now apply to have their children By KATHY NEWBERN Students enrolled in the Perquimans ' County Head Start program can now make Mama Bear knit or Big Drum hit his tummy. If this sounds like fun and games, it's not. These two characters are just two of many developed by Andrell Henry to use in testing speech and hearing of children enrolled in the Head Start program. Henry is a certified audiologist and pathologist, very talented in his field. Daily he serves eight Head Start centers in seven Northeastern North Carolina counties, one of which is his home county of Perquimans. - Henry is a native of Virginia and currently resides in Belvidere. He is employed by Head Start for , the Economic Improvement Council and works with, children ages 3-5. His approach to testing speech and hearing in children is unique. Over a period of seven , years, Henry has developed the Toby Audiometric and Speech Motivating Devices. One of these devices is the Toby Theater where children meet Mama Bear, Big Drum, Sailor Girl, Mr, Clown, Little Dog, and a host of others. All of these are toys which Henry has gotten from ordinary stores, then hooked up electronically so they .will obey a child's command if spoken correctly. Henry pointed out that by using his animation, children are more motivated to respond to speech testing and therefore their abilities can be tested more efficiently. And his approach works. The pre-school children are delighted to play Mr. Henry's . game. They sit before the Toby Theater while; Henry works hidden controls. The toys are such that difficult sounds can be tested such as the two consonant sounds of dr, st, ch, etc. When the child . makes a correct response, TOWE MOTOR COMPANY HERTFORD, N. Andrell Henry Offers patents To Perquimans Head Start Henry works the controls so that the command is carried' out by the toy characters. The Toby Theater can also be used in testing hearing. When the child hears a certain sound or pitch, he is told to touch a lever in front of him, and : again the characters do some sort of mechanical movement. ' In addition to the Toby Theater; Henry has also developed a racing set which responds to correct speech , and hearing responses from the children, a phonograph telephone, and small scale steering wheel and car dashboard. By using any of these devices, Henry is almost assured of motivating children to participate in the "testing." Many of the device ideas were obtained through Henry's previous work with handicapped children. The motivational devices received, the Toby name from a nickname tagged on Henry at an early age. As would be' expected, Henry is also well trained in electronics. By ' combining his education, training, and research in both audiology, path&logy,; and electronics, he has managed to devise his system that is amazing to watch and fun for the children. Henry's educational' background is varied. He received his Associate in Arts degree in electronics from Los Angeles City College, a ' Bachelor of MWW. enrolled in next year's Head Start program which also serves handicapped children. Teachers are Joyce Felton and Deborah Demery, teacher assistants are Elaine Jor dan and Lena Gilliam, Social Service Parent Involve ment Worker is Celestine Modlin. (Newbern photos) . ' Science degree in audiology from Los Angeles State College, and his Master of Arts degree in Health and Safety Education from California State College (now California State University). He has also taken 40 semester hours of additional graduate courses. He has been employed as an Audiologist and-or Speech Pathologist for a total of fifteen years. His work has taken him to the Children's . Hospital Home in Utica, N.Y.; the Cerebral Palsy Center in Richmond,. .Va.; Rough Rock N a v a j o Demonstration School in Chinle, Ariz.; New Mexico State University; New Mexico School for the Deaf; and both the Arizona and West Virginia Departments of Health to mention a few. In addition to his education and employment background, he has received extensive training in the field of electronics, has done five years of research work, and was self employed for eight years.' With a background as varied as his, one would think Andrell Henry has had enough to keep him busy. However, he has added an " endless- list of civic and community involvements to this. And one of his first loves is magic. Henry pointed out that at one time, he had considered becoming a professional magician, but decided to work with children instead.' As a child, he . was ' interested in electronics and electricity and later in life, he decided THE Uses ; ' For Them , STORAGE ' , WORKSHOPS . , OFFICES CONSTRUCTION SITE LAKESIDE HOMES PLAYHOUSES. 1 SOLD DY j.c.DLnf:ciiARDaco.ir:c. ; HERTFORD, n.C iEL-?i A MULT I PURPOSE BUILDING V: DESIGNED WITH YOU IN MIND "Tfco Lfttlo Rt4 torn strong, iiroWo end vory ' .... ..... . ! i' s.
