" Belvidere Resident Works On Statue Dedicated To Albemarle Area From ECSU By KATHY NEWBERN A Belvidere resident who attends Elizabeth City State University recently worked on a Bicentennial statue which has been dedicated to the people of the Albmarle area. Rebecca Spivey of' Belvidere participated in the unveiling and dedica tion ceremony of "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness," a bronze statue of a hand holding a torch, now sitting on the Pasquotank County Courthouse lawn in Elizabeth City. The statue is the result of Ms. Spivey 's efforts and those of an EC SU alumni, Wilbur Davis. The project wascompleted under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Vincent J. deGregorio, head of the art department at ECSU. Dr. deGregorio designed the statue and Davis did the foundation work. Ms. Spivey did the fine carving, which she described as the "surface" work. She spent a total of over 40 hours working on the statue. After completion, the statue was taken to New York where it was bronzed. The next step was the dedication which was held in Elizabeth City recently. The statue is a gift from the students of ECSU to the residents of the Albemarle, and it commemorates the Bicentennial. Along with its title, 1776-1976 is also carv (S2& Saving Bond If . The wife and mother is a sophomore art major at ECSU, and started classes there in the fall of 1974. She has had art classes before, soome of which were under Ms. Max ine Ferrell, former art in structor at the College of the Albmarle. The first painting she did while tak ing the COA class was entered in the Pasquotank County Arts Council show at Southgate Mall and she received an Honorable Mention. Ms. Spivey said this really "spurred" her on.- In addition to this, she added that her family is also an encouragement urg ing her to continue on with her art studies. She said that Ms. Ferrell was also a "big inspiration" to her, as was a personal friend. Ms. Spivey has also par ticipated in the last two art exhibits at the Museum of the Albemarle and has shown her work in several arts shows at Southgate Mall. At present, she has two of her paintings in an ECSU student display at Wachovia Bank in Elizabeth City. Concerning the subject matter of her art, Ms. Spivey commented, "I Replace your old built-in wall cvsnwithanewGEP-7 Self-Cleaning model and a new . The artist said that her style is realistic, but she recently finished her first abstract painting which is a portrait of Christ. Concerning her first abstract, she said, "I'm really thrilled with it since it is my first." It seems that a certain canvas is just meant for a certain pic ture," She added that she agreed with author John Waugh when he said, "See it big, feel it big, and paint it big." Although painting is her first love, Ms. Spivey is also interested in sculpture and ceramics, which is what led her to the statue project. CARD OF THANKS , "The family of Beauna M.
