J ' ' CRYSTAL LEWIS Woman To Enter Military Academy Crystal Lewis, granddaughter of T. Erie Haste Sr. of Elizabeth City and niece of T. Erie Haste Jr. of Hertford, is . among the first 18 women ever to be appointed to the Coast Guard Academy in Newport, Conn. She has also been accepted at the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy, Duke University, Stanford University, and the University of Southern California. Ms. Lewis has not committed to any of the academies or universities, but is leaning toward the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Ms. Lewis is a 17-year old senior at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria. In a class population of 790, she is ranked number 30. She is the daughter of Col. and Mrs. S.P. Lewis of Alexandria. Col. Lewis is stationed at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Ms. Lewis said she has always been interested in the service academies. "It's a good future," she said, "I'm interested in physical education and technically oriented academic programs. There are people in the service interested in the same things." She said she plans to major in math or aeronautical engineering. At school, Ms. Lewis is on the crew team, the yearbook staff, and is in the Spanish and math honor societies. "I like athletics, and I plan to support them when I get in school," she said. Ms. Lewis said she is not a women's libber, but she does believe in equal opportunities for all people, and is especially gung ho for women's athletics. Enlist In Air Force Michael G. Applegate, son of Thomas M. Applegate Sr., of Market St., Hertford, enlisted in the Air Force Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) recently according to Air Force Technical Sergeant Clark Sessoms of the Elizabeth City recruiting office. The Perquimans County High School senior is already accruing time in the Air Force for pay purposes although he will not report for active duty until August 10, 1976. On that date, he will board a jet airliner for Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, where he will undergo six weeks basic training prior to receiving specialized training in the Electronics Career Field. Carlin I. Whitehurst, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Whitehurst of Rt. 1, Belvidere, enlisted in the Air Force Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) recently according to Air Force Technical Sergeant Clark Sessoms of the Elizabeth City . recruiting office.
