Hertford, Perquimans County, N.C., Thursday, June 10, 1976 15 CENTS Activ I, m 1 " ' l " ' i..ii.iini..,r,l, ... - - A Flag Day celebration has been planned for Monday, June 14 by the William Paul Stallings Post 126 American Legion in Hertford. The events will begin with a Bicentennial Flag Day , Motorcade. All Extension Service Clubs, community organizations and groups as well as individuals are invited to participate in this motorcade. The group will assemble at the Per quimans Union School driveway at 4:15 p.m., proceed through Winf all on N.C. 37, go across the Perquimans River Causeway, then along Church St., down Dobbs St., along Edenton Road St., and end up at the Perquimans High School ball park. The motorcade will begin at 4:30 p.m. . Those participating in the motorcade are asked to follow three guidelines. First, a licensed operator must drive a licensed motor vehicle; second, those participating are asked to display an American flag from the vehicle; and third, in dividuals must ride inside of the vehicle. The American Legion Post 126 pointed out that they will not furnish flags or signs or vehicles and the post will not be responsible for any vehi cle or accident. . The festivities will continue with a fish fry at the Legion home on Grubb St. from 5 to 7 p.m. The drawing for the C.B. radio will be held at 7 p.m. with the proceeds going toward payment of the July 4th fireworks. (Newbern photos) SchoolApp Retiring P reciation Luncheon Held ; ersonnel Are Honored THURSDAY, JUNE 10 The Annual Banquet of the Albemarle Regional Planning and Development Commission (ARPDC) scheduled for tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Mrs. Boswell's Restaurant in Edenton has been cancelled. The public will be informed of the new banquet date when it has been rescheduled. FRIDAY, JUNE 11 The Perquimans County Arts Council will present their Bicentennial drama, "Freedoms Way" and "The Rivals," a play within a play, beginning at 9 p.m. in the Perquimans High School ballpark. The fried chicken supper is being sponsored by the Winfall Volunteer Fire Department and pro ceeds will be used to offset Goodwin's medical ex penses. Tickets are $2 and may be purchased from .Winfall firemen or by calling George Roach at 428-7434 after 5 p.m. - !: r The second performance of the Arts Council's play within a play entitled "Freedoms Way and "The Rivals" will be presented at 9 p.m. in the high school ballpark. The Perquimans County Board of Education spon sored their annual end-of-the-year Employe Apprecia tion Luncheon last Friday at Perquimans Central Gram mar School. Attending were teachers, aides, and staff members employed in the Perquimans County School system. Clifford Winslow, Board of Education Chairman, welcomed the group and lunch followed. Entertain ment was provided by coun . ty . music . teachers Danny M-HMMdsM Caroline Wright. Two '-numbers were t per formed. In the first, Ms. Wright performed a trumpet solo "How Great Thou Art" accompanied on the piano by Meads. Then Meads sang "It's Time To Pray" from "I Love America." He was ac companied by Ms. Wright on the piano. Members of the Board of Education were also in at tenda attendance and were recognized. They were Thelma Elliott, George Baker, Emmett ,.Long, Ralph Harrell, and Clifford Winslow. Also leaving PCHS will be Julia Simpson, maid. Laura Matthews, a clerical assis tant over the past years at Perquimans Central Gram mar, is also retiring. And Hertford Grammar School maid Marie Felton was also honored though she could not attend the luncheon. Two Perquimans teachers have marked this past year as their last for teaching. ' Joe Tunnell, agriculture,, teacher; and Elizabeth Britt, English teacher, were honored with retiring teachers' pins. Both have taught for many years at Perquimans County High School. Also among the retiring personnel is Margaret Maston, Perquimans Coun- Referendum Is Planned i. The Inter-County Water Association voted at its regular meeting Thursday night to hold a referendum on Nov. 20, 1976 to determine if the members desire to sell the Inter-County Water System to Perquimans vCounty. A referendum was held previously on this same issue in February of this : year, at which time the members . opposed selling the system. The referendum , will be held on a Saturday between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m. and will be conducted , and regulated in' a manner . similar to those in state and local elections. There will be no other business of the association conducted dur ing these hours. Voting will be by secret ballot. Ribbon Cutting The management and staff of The Perquimans Weekly will be officially opening their new office . space with a ribbon cutting ' ceremony at 10 a.m. on Mon- day, June 14. Officials from -: the Town of Hertford and Chamber of .Commerce of-' flee will be doing the honors. The additional .office is located next to the office currently used by the newspaper on the Cour thouse Square in Hertford. The public is invited to at tend. Dur ing the luncheon, she too was honored and presented a gift from the faculty and staff of the county's schools. C.C. Walters, Superinten dent of Perquimans County Schools, is also retiring. Clifford Winslow recognized him for his many years of service to public education in Perquimans County and presented him with his retirement pin. He was also presented a gift from all school personnel. In brief comments,. Walters described his school work as both a joy and a pleasure and said he had been "blessed with good people to work with.
