Page6-The Perquimans Weekly. Hertford, N.C Thursday. July 1. 1976 ' How Should Ameficd Celebrate Its 200th Birthday 4 (EDITOR'S NOTE: The following paragraphs were written by Mrs. Ruth Winslow's third graders at Hertford Grammar School during the school year in answer to the question, "How Should America Celebrate Its 200th Bir thday?) We should have a party with a big cake. A parade led by a big band would be nice, and there should be many floats made of flowers. After the parade, there should be a big supper with all kinds of food. STACEYCOX We should have a big parade. There should be a big birthday cake so that everyone could have a slice. We should have a play about how people lived long ago. I would like to go to the White House and celebrate America's 200th birthday with President Ford. MICHAEL SKINNER As we celebrate our 20th birthday, people all around America should have parades. Someone should made a big big birthday cake so that everyone could have a slice. ZEBCOPELAND ' I think we should put on a big play with people all around America taking part. It would be fun to play games the people of long ago played. More people should go to places of long ago. Why can't we clean up America? Why can't America be something new? We can help with these things and more this 200th birthday, only if people like you and me help. MARY MARGARET WHITE On the Fourth of July, we should have a blue and gold banquet. We could have a play about the people two hundred years ago. At the end of the day, pass the peace pipe around, sing "America., together, and pledge allegiance to the flag to end the program. SCOTT DIXON I think we should clean up America so that it will be beautiful for its 200th bir thday. Why? We love our country. It's a beautiful country, and we want to keep it that way" by not lit tering. AMY POWERS W I ji 1 "FOR I think that on the Fourth of July everybody should do a good deed. We should all gather around the flag and sing songs like "The Star Spangled Banner." vWe should have a big ewe mat is decorated like a flag, and lpt everybody have a slice. On America's birthday, we should think about the past from 1776 up to 1976. PAULWHEDBEE " I think we should have a' big cake with 200 candles. Who will try to blow them out? Our President, of course. On the Fourth of Ju ly, which is Independence j parade with fireworks. All the store windows ,intown should be decorated fad -RICHARD THACH J I think we should have a parade in Washington, D.C. with President Ford in the middle. We should stop the : parade so everybody could get his autograph. After the parade, we could all go to1 the White House for a tour and a feast of a dinner. CATHY BYRUM We should clean up all the parks, neighborhoods, and cities and put all the litter in garbage cans. After we clean up, we should have a big party. It should be a real big 1 celebration, and we could have cake, ice cream, and cookies. We could have a parade and a big party. It would take 800 boxes of Dun can Hines mix to make one big cake. Wecould have pic tures of George Washington, Mount Vernon, Thomas Jef ferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Abraham Lincln. So meone could hold the first flag, someone else could h o Id our U.S. flag fifty stars. It would be fun for all the people in the U.S. to celebrate America's birthday. HOWARD WHITE I think the Bicentennial is . real fun. I love it! It would have been fun to live two hundred years ago when there were no cars. We sould have horses, carts, oxen and wagons and dress in old timey clothes. MICHELLE PERRY Everybody should have a day off and have a big party of July 4th. We could have a play about people who lived long ago. Everyone who wants to should get to go to the White House. TIMMYPRITT We should have a big celebration on the Fourth of July. Everyone should dress the way they did long ago and we could have a play to show how they lived then. The flag should be raised on the flagpole so that everyone could pledge allegiance to the flag and sing songs to honor it. KENNETH PERRY I think we should have a great big parade. We could invite President Ford to ride on the biggest float, and let anyone else who wants to ride on it. After the parade, we could have a big picnic and let everyone bring food. We should choose a day to clean up America, and everyone nelp. DEANNE ASHLEY If you want my honest opi nion, I think people ir Amer ca should do whatever they wish to celebrate the 200th birthday. For instance, one family from each state go to the White House and par ticipate in a parade, with President and Mrs. Ford and their daughter, Susan. ALICE WHITE .
