On The Fire Line
By CHIEF C.T. SKINNER JR.
October 3-9, 1976 is Fire Prevention Week throughout the
United States. Every week throughout the year is Fire
Prevention Week in Perquimans County. Families should
plan ahead on how to get out of their home if a fire occurs.
"EDITH" (Exit Drills In The Home) should be used by all
in case of emergency evacuation from a building. "EDITH"
is simple to do:
1. Draw a simple floor plan of your home.
2. Draw and discuss with family members at least two ways
of exiting from a home.
3. Plan and carry out an exit drill for the family by crawling
low on the floor.
4. Equipt each family member with a flashlight near the
bed.
5. Close doors as you leave the building.
6. Pre-plan a place in the yard for the family members to
meet. Get out and stay out. .
7. Know the fire department phone number to call for help.
And finally, drill at least once a month like the public
schools are required to do. ... A

EIC Council Offers
Home Winterization
Area residents who meet
federal income guidelines
may have their homes
winterized through the
Emergency Energy Conser
vation Program offered by
the Economic Improvement
Council, Inc.
The purpose of the
Emergency Energy Conser
vation Program is two-fold:
to weatherize and insulate
low-income housing units,
thereby effecting an energy
cost savings to the oc
cupants and to conserve
energy through such pro
grams on a nationwide
basis.
- Fentress T Morris. CAP
Executive Director ex
plained that that major
assumption underlying the
program is that the energy
crisis has severely limited
the ability of those with low
incomes to maintain
minimum living conditions
and in some cases, to sur
vive. In addition to the long
range goals of conserving
energy and lessening the im
pact of increased fuel cost
,for the poor, the program
also deals with emergency
cases. These include in
tervention to restore utility
service or prevent an inter
ruption, and any other
related activities to
alleviate hardships and pre
vent danger to health.
Gilbert Johnson, Energy
Program Coordinator, noted
that the program utilizes
Title X employees and Com
prehensive Employment
and Training Act (CETA)
participants who are trained
in home winterization
techniques. These include
installing insulation, repair
of damaged window frames,
replacement of broken win--dows,
caulking and
weatherstripping. Par
ticipating families are
trained in home
maintenance and energy
conservation.
