Pag-The Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, N.C., Thursday, November 4, 197 Pirates Bow To Red Barons j Five-Way Tie In Conference rLorjaflo, By TONY JORDAN The Gates County Red Barons carried a 17-0 lead into the 2nd half of the crucial conference game in Hertford and held on to win 29-14. The loss dropped the Pirates into a 5-way tie ';for first place as Murfrecsboro was shut out 6-0 by Currituck. The Pirates' hopes are slowly dimming. .Currituck is all but assured of a win over hapless Gum ;berry. The following must happen for the Pirates to represent the Albemarle Conference in championship play: -(1) They must beat Camden next week in Camden, (2) Northampton must beat Murfreesboro and then (3) ; Perquimans would have to win the coin toss between three ; other teams. The others would be Gates, Currituck, and Northampton. . , I The Red Barons struck early. Lee Elliott dashed 54 yards middle way the first quarter, the last ten showing the ; beaten Pirate defense the ball. Ted Hand kicked the extra point. The Pirates fought off Gates' drives through the 'remaining portion of the half up to the two minute warning. Hand capped a 52-yard drive with a 17 yard field goal. The slow moving drive was lead by back, Roy Wilson's running. After an interception, Gates came back with a pass for 20 yards, from Defenio Norfleet to Clifton Britt. Only 33 seconds remained on the first half clock as Hand put the ' 17th Baron point on the board. Volleyball Standings , The following standings have been released for volleyball play in the women's league sponsored by the Perquimans County Recreation Association: Z TEAM It wasnt until the second naif did the Pirates start playing ball significant of their play during the season " Charlie Sutton, barely getting his 100 yards with 107, put the Pirates in the scoring column on the first Pirate play from scrimage of the young half with a 30-yard run. The home team's defense drove Gates deep into their own territory to set up the outstanding field position for Perquimans. The smaller visiting crowd from Gates quieted down only once as Norfleet's pass to Britt was intercepted by Larry Honeyblue on the Gates 30 and returned to the Baron two. A cupping penalty on the play moved the ball to the 33 but with three runs from Sutton, the ball was back to the two. There, Gates got gritty and Sutton, on four downs, was stopped! fumbling in desperation on the fourth try. The short lived momentum for Perquimans was gone. Elliot and Wilson added touchdowns in the third and fourth periods respec tively on Pirate turnovers. The last hurrah for the Pirates came almost unexpectedly as quarterback Marvin Hunter passed, under tremendous pressure, over 40 yards across the field in the air to Carl Zachary. The TD pass covered 47 yards in all, over half of Perquimans' 70 yards of total passing. HOUSE FOR SALE "Wt build" t J. 4. 5, btdroom home from SIMM, up; also 2, 4, t family apartments.
