Mrs. Kate Jones, John Isaac Phelps, Mrs. Gloria Carson and daughter spent the . weekend in New York where they attended the Peopl & Places By FREDA NELSON Within walking distance of Virginia's handsome and historic Capital building Id downtown Richmond, resides one of Hertford's own. native daughters. She lives in a tower apartment complex where, her in dividuality and' genuine warmth embody her elegant abode. r. The person of whom I speak is Mrs. Donnie Nor man Lewis, who many years ago left the confines of her hometown of Hertford, because her husband's work took them to other places. Donnie is the widow of Robert E.Lewis. It was my privilege to become acquainted with Mrs. Lewis through cor respondence regarding her late sister, Mrs. Mattie Macon White Gardner. Mat tie and her first husband, Philip Ernest White of Hert ford, served as missionaries in China before World War II. So on this Thanksgiving Day it was my pleasure to meet, in person, Donnie Lewis. And what an ideal time to get to know each other. Our meeting, however, was much like old friends getting together than new acquaintances. Donnie spoke of her sister's strong calling lathe mission field to minister to the Chinese people'. The joy of her sister's life. Donnie said, was to minister to others. Many will recall this dedicated missionary with fond memories. With enthusiasm Donnie talkedof her varied occupa tions., Having at one time taught school in Hertford, and most recently that of having an assignment at Jhe Masonic - Home in Richmond. Easily detected was the fact that her home-town friends were still very dear ' and close to her heart. She regretfully said that she had not been able to return for visits as often as she would have preferred. She recalled with fond remembrance her childhood church, Hertford Baptist. . During the conversation, Donnie casually remarked that she enjoyed people do ing things for her, but her . pleasure and happiness was to do something for other people, -..v; ,'..,;".. On leaving I asked if there were , messages that she would like for me to bring to her folks, in Hertford. Her reply, "Just tell my friends that I send my love and best regards." It seemed that Donnie con veyed a message of service .itself, however unaware, that "One need not venture to far-a-way places to minister but that it can just as readily be done right in your own home and to those nearby. Visiting with this gracious and charming person was, indeed, a rare opportunity -and truly a blessing. This Thanksgiving Day occasion will remain a highlight in my storehouse of cherished ' memories. v funeral service of their brother, Ed Phelps.
