..v.-;!'' 'h BROWNIE Investure Held Members of Brownie Troop 411 of Hertford met recently at the Hertford United Methodist Church. An Investure Service was. Jield at which time three new members . received their brownie pins. They were Sharla Tilley, Denise Lanning and Kay Matthews. Other troop members to Commission Delorise Barnes, an assis tant professor at. Roane , State Community College, has been appointed by Gov. Ray Blanton to the Ten nessee Commission for Human Development. This Commission is charged with the: responsibility of en couraging, promoting, and developing fair and equal treatment and opportunity for all individuals in Ten nessee regardless of race, color, creed or national origin. Mrs. Barnes, who is in her second year at the college, ; teaches a variety of business courses in the career education division. Before coming to Roane State, she taught in the secondary schools of Roane County from 1970 through f 1974, and also taught for three years with the adult education program of the Oak Ridge School System. She holds the B.S. degree 4 from Livingstone College, Salisbury, N.C. and the M.S, degree from the University of Tennessee. Jw.:iKinoy r i . , , TROOP 411 receive pins were Denise s Brown, Lora Vaughn, Karen Tice, Lisa Mann, Ellen Lane, Carrie Daneder and Valarie Vaughn. Each of the girls received their first year pins. After the service, refreshments were served and the meeting was, dismissed after repeating the Brownie Pledge. Appointment ly working on her disserta tion for a doctor of education degree also from UT. This year, Mrs. Barnes received a mini-grant from RSCC to assist with work relating to her dissertation. In 1972, she was the reci pient of the Public Schools for Cooperative Research Mini-grant, and in 1974, received the Education and Professions Development Act Fellowship. She is a member of the American Vocational Association, the Tennessee Vocational Association, Delta Pi Epsilon (national graduate fraternity in business), Phi Delta Kappa (national honor fraternity for education), and the Ten nessee 51.3 percent Committee-A Committee of Women for Carter-Mondale. Mrs. Barnes and her hus band, James M. Barnes, and their two children reside in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Mrs. Barnes is the former Delorise Creecy. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Creecy, Sr., of Rt. 1, Hertford, N.C. The Move Mr. and Mrs. Paul Smith and Mrs. Adrin Smith spent the weekend in Chapel Hill and visited Adrian Smith, Jr., who is a patient in Memorial Hospital. Jesse P. Perry is a surgery patient in Norfolk General Hospital. 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. Jack T. Benton of Rt. 4, Hertford, were honored Sunday, Jan. 9 at a reception given by their children in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. The reception was held at Woodland United Methodist Church and approximately 180 people at tended. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Spivey returned home Wednesday after an en joyable trip extending to the Florida Keyes. They spent Christmas and New Years in Miami visiting Mrs. Spivey s niece and her hus band, Mr. and Mrs. L.S. Jamison. They had the pleasure of having her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Louis H. Grayhill from Roanoke, Va. join, them there for the Holidays. The Spiveys reported beautiful weather that added to a lovely time. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Perry and son, Timmy, spent the weekend at Virginia Beach, Va. visiting relatives. Visitors of the E.J. Proc tor family on Sunday in cluded Mrs. Proctor's mother, Mrs. Dora Jones from - Creswell; also, her Aunt Sadie from Ports mouth, Va. Mrs. Lola Watkins returned home Sunday from Virginia Beach, Va. where she . visited the Donald Faison family. She will be staying a few days with Mr. Club To Reorganize The Triangle Club of Snug Harbor met on Jan. 5 for the purpose of reorganization. In the future this club will , be known as the Snug Har bor Women's Club. Under the newly drawn up con stitution and bylaws, the women will work closely with the Snug Harbor Property Owners Associa tion and the Civic League in fund raising projects to improve the Snug Harbor community. Among the fund raising projects planned will be the annual bazaar held over the Fourth of July weekend. There will be no club dues. All Snug Harbor women who are paid , up property owners or renters in good standing are welcome to membership. Mrs. Fannie Leigh was Mistress of Ceremony. Music was by the Senior, - H.V. White Choirs combined and the Rev. J.L. Wills Traveling Echoes under the direction of Mrs. Barbara Shannon, organist. A member from each aux iliary of the church gave brief remarks. Rev. Walter Leigh gave remarks in behalf of the Perquimans County Credit Union of which Deacon Moore is President. A Tree of donations from the church was designed and presented to Deacon Moore by Trustee Linwood Turner. He was also presented a plaque by Mrs. Fannie Leigh. Congratulations Deacon Moore for the services you are rendering to your com munity and church. He is married to the former Beulah Overton and they have four sons and one daughter. Mr. Harris is a part-time student at N.C. State University. He is also farming part-time now, but will devote his fulltime to farming when he receives his diploma in May, Miss Dianne Layden and Deborah Morton have returned to Richmond, Va. after spending the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Elton Layden. Mr. Reuben Knopf, Jr. has returned to his work in ' Winston-Salem after spend ing two weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Knopf , Sr. Mrs. W.T. Riddick and Mrs. Vivian Dale visited Mrs. Agnes Ward Brabble of the Yeopim Section on Sunday. Friends were sorry to hear of Mr. George Carver's death and wish to extend their sympathy to the family. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Layden spent the weekend with Mrs. Layden's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Edwardo Schick at Virginia Beach, Va. Honored Dr. Joseph C. Dickens was honored at a buffet dinner Saturday at the home of his mother, Mrs. M.E. Nelson, in Snug Harbor. A decorated cake in white and blue sporting a replica of a doctor, structured from metal wire and bolts, adorned the cake with the inscription "Congratula tions and Bon Voyage." Lighted candles glowed on the tables where guests were seated after partaking of the buffet. Burning logs in the fireplace added warmth to the occasion. The honoree, who recently received his doctorate in Physiology at Texas A&M University, left Wednesday to begin a tenure in teaching and research at Freiburg University in Freiburg, West Germany. Mrs. W.N. Waters, Dr. Dickens' aunt, of Arrow head Beach, N.C. co-hosted the event with Mrs. Nelson. Guests numbered sixteen. VISITS JAMAICA Stan Winslow returned home last week from a ten day visit in Jamaica. Stan was one of a group of fourteen young people representing N.C. Yearly Meeting of Friends, who participated in a work camp to help repair Amnity Friends Meeting House in Jamaica. Stan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Winslow of Belvidere. He has now returned to NCSU in Raleigh to complete his Junior year. BACKHOME Mrs. Dot Yantis has returned to her home in Florida after spending several days with her mother, Mrs. W.F.
