FIRE DAMAGES HOME
OF MAYOR VIVIAN
DARDEN: Fire and water
wrought considerable
damage to the home of
Mayor Vivian N. Darden on
. Friday afternoon. The
alarm was sounded at 1:20
p.m., and for more than an
hour firemen battled to con
fine the flames to the attic
where they started. All fur
niture was moved out of the
mayor's Front Street home
to places of safety within a
few minutes after firemen
and other volunteers ar
rived on the scene. Plaster,
wallpaper and woodwork
were damaged by the water
sprayed on the builting in
stopping the fire, and the
flames, fanned by a brisk
wind, virtually destroyed
' the roof. The loss,' approx
imately $3,000 at an unof
ficial estimate, is covered
