V j UNUtN Depend on us SundayS , POWER OVER SICKNESS AND DEATH (Luke 7:11-23) Out of compassion Christ repeatedly and freely used His great power to help those in need. Two cases are described in this lesson. , Power Over Death Luke 7:11-17 As Christ, attended by His disciples and others, ap proached Nain, they came upon a scene of gloom and sadness. A funeral procession emerged on the way to the cemetery. The corpse was wrapped carefully in linen and then laid on an open bier within plain view of all. The bier was borne by friends who relieved each other at frequent intervals. .: Death never seems so cruel as when it cuts off one in the prime of life, as in the case of the only son of a widow. The broken-hearted mother was weeping because the center of her affections had been taken a way. Observing the grief of the mother, Christ pitied her. The only appeal made to Him was that of the sorrow of a mother's heart. While an of the circumstances pleaded on her behalf, the tears of the mother touched Christ's heart. He insisted that the bereaved mother not weep because He was about the remove the cause of her sorrow. Without ceremony or display Christ walked over and touched the bier. Those who bare it stood still, filled with wonder and expectation. They realized they were in the presence of One Who had the right to stop them, even on their way to the tomb. They waited to hear what He had to say. It was thought that He had defiled Himself, inasmuch as touching a bier was equivalent to contact with a leper. That quiet voice said: "Young man, I say unto thee, Arise." To the astonishment of all the young man sat up and began Obituary GEORGE ELBERT COPELAND Funeral services for George Elbert Copeland, S3, who died Jan. 27 in Meadow Brook Hospital in East Meadow, L.I., N.Y., were held Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2:30 p.m. in the Riddick's Grove Baptist Church in Belvidere. When Christ gave the young man back to his mother, that terribly dark day became the most blessed in her experience. Power Over Discouragement Luke 7: 18-23 - John the Baptist had been faithful in proclaiming Christ as the Lamb of God Who had come to take away the sin of the world, but he had not foreseen that the Saviour would be rejected by the nation, and that His reign would not be established forthwith. For his bold reproof of Herod and Herodias for adultery, the preacher was imprisoned at Machaerus on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. While in prison, John thought about Him Whom he had baptized in the Jordan River. Since Christ had not done all that he had expected Him to do, John was greatly perplexed. In his discouragement John sent two of his disciples to the Lord Jesus, "Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?" Christ gave them a display of His divine ministry of healing. Before their eyes Christ cured many in order to prove His identity. Since "actions speak louder than words," Christ could not have used any more eloquent method of answering John's question. Chrsit sent the messengers back to John the Baptist. They told of miracles the like of which they had never seen. To John the Baptist this was proof that Christ was the Messiah.
