Several other health ser vices are available to local residents at neighboring health departments in the District Health Department pro gram. These services are not available at the local department but are avail able to Perquimans resi dents by traveling to Pas quotank or Chowan coun ties. Some of these "neighboring" services available include: multi phasic screening, ortho pedic screening, speech and hearing clinics, and the development evaluation clinic. Although these ser vices are not offered at the Perquimans County Health Department building, the local staff can give those in terested, information and schedules on any of these programs. A brief explanation of the services provided by the local health department was given by Mrs. Barber. . She explained that , the p maternity clinic is offered '' free of charge, as are most local services, to expectant mothers. The clinic includes an overall check-up, a pap smear, blood tests, uri nalysis, counseling and in cludes the services of Dr. John Crawford who also works with the family plan ning clinic. Family planning is another local service and is similar to the. maternity clinic. It too includes a pap smear and blood tests for the patient as well as urinalysis and counseling. The local health department offers birth control devices in the form of oral con traceptives and the ultrauterine device. These services are free of charge to participants. The mater nity clinic is held the first and fourth Tuesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. Family planning and maternity clinics are held the first, second, and third Tuesdays of each month beginning at 12:30 p.m. Dr. James Slade, an Edenton Pediatrician, works with the local depart ment in the child health clinic held the second Wednesday of each month at 9 p.m. and at 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday. This ser vice for children is similar -to a doctor's check-up. It includes weighing and measuring the child, check ing the eyes and ears, etc. Also, immunizations are in cluded as a part of the child health program when the child is old enough and the shots are needed. Pediatrics ' and nurse screening is held at 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. Any health department is perhaps best known for its immunization program. Locally, nurses immunize children against diptheria, whooping cough, tetnus, rubella, polio, measles. In later years, booster shots are also provided. Host im munizations, begin when a child is two months ot age and then continue through school age. It is a state law that children, cannot be enrolled in school until they have completed certain im munization requirements. A minimal fee of 12 is charged for the chest X-ray clinic held every Thursday from 9-11 a.m. at the Per quimans County Health Department. The eye clinic is by ap pointment only at the health department and is usually held monthly on a Tuesday. -It involves screening by nurses in ; the county's schools and screening of those who visit the health department. Those found to have possible eye problems are then referred to the local department's social worker. T0WE MOTOR COMPANY HERTFORD, N.
