Tise, State Historic Preservation Officer. The Register is described as a national list of distinctive properties worthy of preserva tion because of their historical or other cultural value. Belvidere is well-preserved Georgian style plantation house distinguished by its unusual and dramatic Up-on-gambrel roof. The porch, modillion cornice, and interiors are hand some, representative Georgian elements that demonstrate the wealth and taste of the Newby family for whom the house was built. It was built in the mid to late 18th century (tradition says I77Xfor either Thomas Newby or his son. Exum. The Newbys were substantial planters and both were active in local Friends' meetings; the Quaker denomination was an important influence in the early development of the Albemarle region. The house descended into the Lamb family, also Friends, and remained in this family until the 1930's. The many descendants of the family across the country have continued to be interested in the house, and one of the present owners is a Lamb descendant. The nomination was submitted in connection with the Divi sion of Archives and History's long-range program to iden tify and document the authenticity of historic properties in North Carolina. Approval of the nomination by the Depart ment of the Interior usually takes about six months and will be announcedthrough the state's congressional delegation. m nil niv tb w m LT Im liu LTlrfA Ud W ilia Zl3 ml tiu M E HARRIS Price good from Febuary 3 thur Febuary 20 STORE HOURS Ed H SHOPPING while quantities last.
