POWER TO FORGIVE SIN
. Luke 7:36-50
A Proud Pharisee
We are not told the specific motive which prompted
Simon the Pharisee to invite Christ to dine with him. Ob
' viously, it was not because of admiration for the Lord.
Perhaps hostility caused Simon to get Christ where he could
listen to His words and observe His actions to discover some
flaw and prefer charges against Him.
Regardless of the motive, Christ accepted the Invitation
and joined the other guests at the appointed time. When
Christ entered the house, the servants of Simon ignored
' Him and the Pharisee withheld the customary kiss of
' salutation and welcome. He merely pointed to the seat
r which Christ was to occupy at the table. His attitude was a
studied and intentional insult, but Christ refused to be af-
fronted by Simon's incivility. ,
A Prostrate Penitent
Hearing that Christ was in Simon's house, an unnamed
woman, who had been notorious for her life of sin and
shame, came uninvited and stationed herself behind Christ

For Your Information
Dear friends,
Education about death is proceeding
in some communities throughout the
country, with this stated objective: "To
help people understand their feelings
and attitudes toward death and dying ,
so that death will be less fearful, and
living more enjoyable." Books are also,
being written on the subject. Death is a
subject that has been taboo too long. -.,

Perhaps she had previously listened to the message of
Christ and had been convicted of sin which led to genuine
repentence toward God and to a personal faith in the
Saviour. She experienced the forgiveness of sin and her soul
was filled with peace and Joy.
Her purpose in entering Simon's house was to express ner
gratitude to Christ for forgiving her sins and transforming
her life. Standing behind His extended feet, she intended to
anoint them with delicately scented ointment she had
brought with her. Overcome with emotion, she could not
proceed with her task. She gave vent to her feelings, by
shedding tears so abundantly that they moistened Christ's
feet. For lack of a towel, she unloosened her long hair and
wiped away her tears from His feet She then smothered
them with her repeated kisses, as an expression of gratitude
and affection for Him. She also opened her flask of precious
ointment and emptied its fragrant contents upon His feet
Real love for Christ always manifests itself in deeds.
A Penetrating Prophet
Because Christ accepted the attention of a woman of bad
repute, Simon was greatly perplexed. He thought if Christ
were a real prophet, He would have withdrawn His feet
from the woman or thrust her back with them. On the other
hand, he reasoned that if He knew her character, His
tolerance of her conduct proved that He was not a good
man. :
, Reading Simon's unspoken thoughts, Christ remarked:
"Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee." The Pharisee
replied, "Master, say on."
Christ then told the story of a man with two debtors, one of
whom owed ten times as much as the other. Neither debtor
could pay, so the creditor forgave both. Christ then asked
Simon which debtor would love the creditor most,
whereupon he replied, the one who had been forgiven the
largest amount Christ told Simon that this women had been
forgiven much, and therefore loved Him devotedly. He also
reminded him that she had lavished upon Him her affec
tions and gifts, whereas Simon had even failed to extend to
Him the common courtesies accorded respectable guests.
True forgiveness and salvation result in much love for
Christ and faithful service for Him. If love and faithful ser
vice for Christ are lacking, one may know that true
forgiveness and salvation have not been received. Genuine
gratitude to the Lord for what He has done for one will
always find expression in words and deeds of the one whom
He has saved and transformed.
