The recorder spoke harshly to the game warden who brought the farmer to court. It was disclosed that the farmer was shooting geese that were eating his oats and beans as game wardens ac costed him and attempted to take his gun. The farmer ordered the wardens off his property and the recorder served notice that he would uphold any other farmer who used the same means to protect his property. However, the farmer must leave the dead geese on the ground and notify the game wardens to dispose of them. Geese have been more numerous this winter in Per quimans County than in many years past, and local farmers have been heard to complain loudly about damage the birds to in their fields. HOG MARKET AT WIN FALL FAVORED BY PER QUIMANS COUNTY FARM BUREAU: The Perquimans County Farm Bureau,, revived and active again, favors a hog market. Not an Elizabeth City hog market, but a cooperative hog market in the center of the , Albemarle - In" Winfall. .' "Winfall," says Irvin Nixon, secretary of the rein vigorated bureau, "is the most centralized spot in the whole section north of the Albemarle Sound the hub of Perquimans, Chowan, Pasquotank, and Gates Counties." Expenses at tached to a market alone are small, the equipment con sisting for the most part of scales, pens and loading conveniences. The president of the Perquimans Farm Bureau is J.W. Ward, register of deeds. N.H. Stall ings of Belvidere is vice president and Mrs. Nixon is secretary and treasurer. The officers took their posts on February 7th. Letters To The Editor A Plea For Law Enforcement TO THE EDITOR: This is my first letter to a newspaper, but I feel the need to ask all of you for support in trying to get the laws enforced in this community. v Sunday afternoon around 2:00 p.m. I let my little dog, Jake, outside to 'do his business.' We have no children and One Aspect Of ERA TO THE EDITOR: I am writing this letter regarding the timely and vital sub ject of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), whose fate will soon be determined by the legislators of our states. Because this paper has not carried any specific informa tion on the ERA, I would like to quote the Amendment. It is as follows: Section 1. "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." Section 2. "The Congress shall have the power to enforce by appropriate legislation the provisions of this article," , Section 3. "This amendment shall take effect two years' after the date of ratification." I look at Section 2. and wonder what we may be sur rendering to the Federal Government. We have just celebrated the Bicentennial Anniversary of our country. It was then our Founding Fathers gave the citizens liberty by separating powers and by giving most power to the States. However, the proposed amendment would hand over to Congress our most personal and private human rights establishing a more powerful centralized Federal Government. Certainly discrimination should not occur between the sexes. We already have laws to that effect the Equal Pay Act of 1963; The Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972; The Equal Educational Amendment Act of 1972; The Equal Credit Act of 1974; and the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution. - The laws are made for our use; our problem is that they have not been used effectively. By this proposed amendment, I believe we have so little to gain, and much to lose. SYLVIA C.MATTHEWS 320 N. Church St. Hertford, N.C. Excellent Se minar TO THE EDITOR: ' Congratulations for the excellent seminar held recently in news writing for correspondents and news contributors sponsored by The Perquimans Weekly. I was impressed with your objective and plan of action. It was one of the best seminars I have attended in communication. I agree that writing articles for our local newspaper can be one of the most satisfying parts of a writing experience. Thousands of people read our paper. Spot checks have shown that they are influenced by what they read. ' Won't you agree that good news articles can make you well known in a short time? Good news articles can make every home a classroom. ' ; We must remember that the people we write for are not a captive audience. They are free to ignore our efforts any time they want to and they'll do it, too, if what we write is ' not easy to read. When writing for easy reading, we should . be conversational, use short easy-to-understand words, use personal words, use short, varied sentences, use short paragraphs and put down our thoughts in logical order, ' You and your staff should be commended for your ex , cellent work in publishing ThePerquim ans Weekly. MRS. M.B.TAYLOR, , Home Economics Extension Agent P.O. Box 87 Hertford, N.C. consequently have invested a lot of our love and affection in our little poodle-mix dog, Jake. He's heen around all of our married life twelve years. We love him dearly. Usually he returns promptly and when he didn't we became con cerned. We looked and called for him to no avail. Finally, he was found huddled on the church steps next door to us, cry ing and shaking. Believing him to have been hit by a car we rushed him to a local vet our hearts in our hands. The prognosis was bad a cracked pelvis, a fracture of one leg, loss of bowel and bladder control, and paralysis in both legs. We were advised to watch and nurse him carefully; if no im provement, we would have to have him put to sleep. For the first two nights, Jake, in obvious pain, cried con stantly the injection he was given was not effective. My husband and I took turns staying up with him. Needless to say there was no sleep in the Brantham household until Wednesday night, when after a return to the vet, we received an injection to help him sleep he slept part of the night.'.- We began a routine that will be carried out until a decision is reached concerning his life. He cries when he needs to go '. outside. We carry him out in our arms and lay him beside a shrub. There he does his business but because he cannot stand, he wets himself all over and begins to cry. He cries . became he does not understand what has happened tohimJi and he is very confused. We carry him back inside, bathe him, and dry him with a hair dryer to prevent complications of cold or infection. He is on a special diet to enable his bowels to move. This routine is taxing to us and to him, to usr because we suffer for him, and to him because of the intense pain. .. ( By this time you may wonder what all this has to do with law enforcement. Well please bear with me a few more minutes. My husband and I decided to take him to another vet to ensure we were doing everything possible to help him recover. Please keep in mind he is a very special little dog to us and you don't give up easily on those you love. Another vet advised us to obtain X rays. We went to an Emergency Vet. Hospital in Virginia Beach where this was done. We were stunned! The results showed that little Jake had been shot with a .22 caliber bullet and the bullet is still lodged deep within his body. The vet was horrified that this happended within the city limits of our town. I am deeply saddened by this experience. I have cried over the pain Jake is suffering and the thought of having to put him to sleep, but the tears I've cried over a fellow human being purposely shooting little Jake comes from deep within me. We live in town and this happened within the city limits before the hours of the curfew. Jake had been lucky in the past. He was shot in the head and survived. This happened last year in town assailant unknown. We had an afganhound shot last year assailant known and reported. Nothing was done. This person moved out of town so we can assume this incident was caused by someone else. Finally after three times, I'm outraged! This is against the law. People cannot indiscriminately shoot a dog or anything else within the city limits. Enforcement of the law must be lax if people feel free to shoot what they don't like or what irritates them. ' : Jake's life is already ruined, but there are other precious vanimals that people love that must be protected. Please Protect Them! JODI BRANTHAM 212 Dobbs Street - - Hertford, N.C. SOFTENING PROCESS ' Hardened paint brushes can often be made as good as new by simmering them in boiling vinegar for a few minutes and then washing them in soapy water. ' ; STICKY PROBLEM? When postage stamp, stick together, place a piece cf paper over them and press with a hot iron. . The stamps should come apart. COOL SUGGESTION Turn , a car's air condi tioner on for a few minutes once a month during the winter. Otherwise seals and gaskets could dry out and lose efficiency. SAFETY IDEA Keep a box of baking soda in the glove compartment of .. the car to use as an emergency fire extinguisher for an engine fire. Should a fire occur, turn off the igni tion and toss the soda on the engine. Soda will also smother a blaze should a fire start in a seat cushion or floor mat. Keep a sprinkling of soda in the ashtrays to prevent cigarettes from smoldering in the car. MEETING , , RESCHEDULED ' The precinct meeting planned for Feb. 10 has been rescheduled for May 5 due to the Governor's statement on the energy shortage.
