V Sunday School Besson ! 1 I JESUS OFFERS HIMSELF ' . i f hrist'a unique ministry and its popularity brought about confrontation with the religious leaders. . v t li I Markll:7-10 . Mnong the Orientals it was customary for a monarch to Hoe upon an animal covered with very expensive cloths. As Cljrist was about to enter Jerusalem as the One Who would Veliver the people from the bondage of sin, His disciples : stripped themselves of their outer garments and placed Jhf m on the colt or donkey as they did not have the money to purchase the expensive cloths, nor the time to procure them. ' . . ... . ; .:.. j The multitudes preceding and following Christ acknowledged His claims to kingship by crying: "Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord." Thus Jhe? acclaimed Christ as the Messiah. As the procession ad vanced, many spread their garments and small olive bran ches in the road. I Mark 14:32-36 I Christ and the eleven disciples went to a garden which Wis approximately a mile from Jerusalem. He had come here frequently for prayer. The name 6f the place was 'Gethsemane," which means "oil press." Probably it was ulnamed because a press was there to extract oil from the J V olives in the orchard. It was an emblem of trial, distress, and agony. Our Lord's distress as He was approaching the cross cannot be estimated because we do not have anything with which to compare it. Arriving at Gethsemane, Christ divided the disciples into two groups, leaving eight near the entrance of the garden to wait and to watch, and taking the other three Peter, James, and John into the garden with Him. Because they were the closest to Him, Christ chose them to stand by Him in this solemn hour. Merely to have them near Him was to be a source of comfort to Christ. But even these Christ did not permit to be with Him when He prayed and expressed His complete submission to the Father's will. Mark 15:33-39 -;. . It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified our Saviour. At noon there came a three-hour period of super natural darkness which extended over the whole land. In the midst of that darkness, which was a symbol of God's displeasure with the attitude of the people towards His Son, there was heard the voice of Jesus crying, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" The abuse heaped upon Christ uttered the saddest cry, that was ever heard. Far beyond all physical suffering was the turning away of the Father, which to the Saviour was agony unspeakable.
