Winfall Water
Plan Discussed
;
TO THE EDITOR:
I read in an article that appeared in the March 10th issue
of The Perquimans Weekly that the commissioners are
discussing updating our water system. I can say our
because I am a home owner in Perquimans County even
though I am not living there at present
I would like to have the commissioners look into the water
system at Winfall. During my recent visit home I found the
water to be very hard and apparently contained no water
softeners or other ingredients used to remove the harsh
chemicals from the water.
I was told that the chemicals were not being put in the
water because the former employe quit and no one had been
hired to fill his position. Without these chemicals in our
water it is very bard on our plumbing. We have to use more
soap and laundry detergents and it doesn't taste good. I am
a taxpayer in Winfall so I have a right to complain. Please
send me the names and addresses of the commissioners so I
can file a formal complaint if necessary. I will appreciate
your cooperation.

Memory Recalled
TO THE EDITOR
; In the obituary column of your March 24 issue of The
; Perquimans Weekly I learned that Julian Fleetwood of
- Ferndale, Mich, has died.
' The news brought back to me a very vivid memory of a
time when Julian was one of the big boys in Hertford and I
' was a member of the little boys.
I enjoyed watching the big boys play baseball on the
school grounds. When Julian came to bat he would stand at
;the plate swinging his bat as though he intended to knock
the ball to kindgom come. And each time he would sound off
; the outfielders, "Stand back, fielders. Stand back."
' . Usually the fielders would move back in order to be able
to catch the hit Julian was going to make. But time and
; again, Julian would fly out to the infield or hit a grounder.
And sometimes he would just strike out. 1
' But one day Julian strode to the plate, the picture of
-confidence, and yelled out his usual instruction to the
1 outfielders.
- But on this particular day, the outfielders remembering
'past performances of Julian, instead of moving farther out,
: moved closer in.
The pitcher' wound up and pitched straight across home
plate. Julian swung with all his might. Bat and ball con-
nected with a loud bang. The ball took off. It rose in the air
higher and higher than any one in Hertford had ever seen a
; ball soar. It kept on and on.
Few of the big boys in Hertford had ever knocked a ball as
; far as the Fowler house. But this time, Julian's hit not only
'reached that house, and so far as I know was never found
-again. :
I Julian, enjoying his triumph, strolled around the bases,
and the scorer tallied up a home run. Casey had redeemed .
himself. -
;I In the many years since, I have seen many baseball
.games and have Seen many home runs made, but never
;have I enjoyed a baseball triumph more than I did when
Julian made his mighty hit.
Hope you will publish this story.
