I'm sure someone in the county knows where they plan to put the lines. GEORGE E.OGG Rt. 3, Box 360 Hertford, N.C. On FCC TO THE EDITOR: ,.t , Telephone users in northeastern North Carolina have reason to be pleased by the call of the U.S. Senate com munications subcommittee for March hearings on the con troversial practices of the Federal Communications Com mission. We believe these practices will mean higher rates for our customers, and we welcome this step by the Upper House to review the actions of appointed officials at the FCC.-.'. Consumers in this community should be aware of these' hearings and the issue involved so they can make their opinions known to their elected representatives. And the FCC should take no further action to extend its controver sial decisions while Congress reviews the policy issue involved. Under study in Congress are FCC rulings which the telephone companies state will cause basic rate increases of up to 60 per cent (excluding inflation) by 1985 for residen tial, rural and small business customers. The rulings allow -consumers to own their own phone equipment, the non telephone copanies to provide long distance communica tions services for big business firms. House hearings were held on the issue last fall and now the Senate is exploring the subject with testimony by a number of witnesses, including the president of the U.S, In dependent Telephone Association. The Norfolk Carolina -Telephone Company is a member of USITA and we strongly support the industry's position. Nearly 200 Representatives and Senators last year and already more than 50 this year are sponsors of the Con sumer Communications Reform Act, a bill we support to en courage just this type of Congressional review of national communications policy. With Senate hearings in progress, now is an excellent time for all of us to write our Congressmen and let them know how we feel about this subject. Congress must make a full examination of the issue and determine the true public interest. . TERRY F.DANIELS. , . t Vice-President Norfolk Carolina Telephone Company 103 S.
