JESUS COMMISSIONS HIS FOLLOWERS
' - Luke 24:44-53
To the little group of discouraged disciples Christ ap
peared. He convinced them that He had actually risen from
the dead nd that "all things must be fulfilled, which were
written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and In the
psalms" concerning Him. He endorsed the Old Testament
as a dependable record of the prophecies concerning His
death and resurrection. Then Christ opened their
understanding about His death and resurrection. He disen
tangled their minds, took out the wrong ideas and pre
judices, and set them free to comprehend the Scriptures.
Many of God's children today need that sort of treatment.
' What a blessing that some are submissive enough to the
Lord for Him to use them to render this service to those who
needit! ......
Christ revealed to the disciples the great significance of
His death and resurrection. Because He died and rose again
remission of sins was made available to sinners. Christ
taught the disciples that it was His plan and purpose for
i them to be witnesses for Him, beginning at Jerusalem and
preaching "repentance and remission of sins" to all
peoples. It was their privilege as followers of Christ to
preach repentance toward God, faith in Christ and remis
sion of sins to all who would believe on the Saviour.
Christ wanted His disciples to act in behalf of their Lord.
They had been honored and blessed in being chosen as
witnesses for Christ. A witness is one who has seen, heard,
experienced, or known something, and who is willing to tell
what he knows. A witness for Christ to a saving knowledge
of Christ. Christian witnessing is of two kinds of the lips
and of the life. The life speaks even when the lips are silent.
Witnessing to Christ's power to save is a task for all Chris
tians. No greater work can occupy the thought, time,

strength, or substance of human beings. Because this task
transcends their natural abilities, Christians must have
spiritual replenishment. If hearts and lives are to be
changed, the Holy Spirit must accompany the witnesses for
Christ and empower and use their testimony. Power for ef-r
fective witnessing for Christ does not reside in any of Hit'.
disciples, but in the Holy Spirit.
, Since any attempt to witness in the power of human'
energy was to fail miserably, our Lord commanded His-:
: disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they were endued with
the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was then, and
now is, the only source of power for effective witnessing for ,
Christ. Christ did not hesitate to tell this earnest group of'
His followers that they were still incompetent to do His
work without the Holy Spirit. .
After commanding His disciples to evangelize the lost,';
Christ led them out of Bethany. In that vicinity He bestowed ,
upon them His blessing. Surely, they must have been,!
ashamed of their past failures, humiliated by their recent'
doubtings, and overwhelmed with the realization of the
gigantic task before them. As Christ, with uplifted hands,,
bestowed His blessing upon them, "He was parted from';
them and carried up into heaven." They worshipped Him
and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. '.
