He styled himself "a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ." Greatly distressed because of opposition and oppression, these believers were in great need of encouragement. James reminded them that God's care of His children is constant and never-failing. They were the "brethren" of James both by nature and by grace. It was to their brotherhood in Christ that James referred primarily. ' ' Very likely James startled his readers when he told them to rejoice because they were hedged in by various trials. He pointed out that Satanic onslaught is a sure sign of spiritual activity. He taught that, instead of trying to shum them, Christians are to meet their trials joyfully. Trials discipline a child of God and aid him greatly in the development of his Christian character. The endurance of trials often results in the full surrender to the perfect will of God. Anything that brings one nearer to God is certainly a blessing. . Each of us is painfully aware of his lack of wisdom. One may have abundance of knowledge and yet be sadly defi cient in wisdom. When we lack wisdom, we should always remember that God is the source of wisdom. He has an unlimited supply and He is very desirous of imparting it to Hischildren. : Frequently the poor think the rich are free from all trials, but such is not the case. The rich are brought fact to face with the fact that earthly possessions mean nothing so far : as eternal salvation is concerned. Wealth has a tendency to make men self-sufficient, but we must never forget that "our sufficiency is of God." Christianity has a great level ing effect. It causes the poor and humble to rejoice in that they are exalted, and it causes the rich and proud to forsake their self-trust. Non-Christians do not know about the peace, love, and joy which thrill the hearts of the faithful Christians when they encounter trials. "The crown of life" awaits the Christians who endure trials for Christ's sake. A danger that sometimes arises out of trials is the tenden cy to accuse God of tempting one to sin. Temptations do not come from God. He has never enticed anybody to sin. Many temptations spring from our human desires. Satan tries to entice us to sin, but that is all that he can do. Satan cannot compel us to sin. He frequently sends trials and troubles upon people who are loyal to Christ. The respon sibility of doing evil rests upon the individual who sins against God, others, and himself. One should never lay the blame for his sins on Satan, on others, or on God, but he should place it where it actually belongs, and that is on self. Each is free t to choose the evil or the good. We rejoice in the assurance that victory over temptation and sin is ours through Christ.
