(SCS Photo) Mincey Warren Mincey has been assigned as a Soil Conserva tionist for the Hertford Edenton field office. His ap pointment to this office by the Soil Conservation Ser vice became effective May 16. Mincey is a native of Open House Planned At Coast Guard Station The Elizabeth City Coast Guard Air Station will spon sor an open house from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 to celebrate Armed Forces Day. Visitors will be invited to tour Air Station facilities and observe some of the various aspects of Coast Guard operations. The Elizabeth City Air Station had a meager begin ning in 1940 with three of ficers and 52 enlisted men at the old Hollowell Plantation on the shores of the Pas quotank River. Beginning in 1942, spurred on by the demand of war, this station moved through a period of rapid expansion while serving as a training base for both Army and Navy personnel and pro viding coastal patrols. In " 1966, the Air Station's duties again expanded after assuming the respon Mailbox Week The United States Postal Service has designated May 23-28 as Mailbox Improve ment Week throughout the nation. The annual observance is held in an effort to en courage customers on rural, city motorized, and contract delivery routes examine and improve the appearance of their mailboxes. He has worked the past two sum mers as a trainee with the Soil Conservation Service in Granville and Wilson coun ties. He will be assisting sibilities of the Air Stations at Newfoundland and Ber muda which closed. In the fall of last year, the Coast Guard opened a new base at Clearwater, Fla. and relocated four of Elizabeth City's eight C-130s. In addi tion, the HH52 helicopters here were replaced by three HH3 helicopters from Coast Guard Air Station Brooklyn. Using these seven air crafts, the 250 officers and men of the Elizabeth City Air Station have the respon sibility for Search and Rescue from the southern North Carolina border, into Maryland including the Chesapeake Bay, and hun dreds of miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. In addition they are often called upon to send aircraft north to Greenland, south to the Car ribean and South America, or east to the Azores. Logistics and support ex pose of Mailbox Improve ment Week is to call atten tion to the need for pro viding mail receptacles which are designed to pro tect the mail from the weather and are neat in ap pearance, conveniently located, and safe to use. They find that they can cut back on things like vegetables. They'll stay warm before they eat." In an effort to assist elder ly citizens in just that kind of situation, the Perquimans County Department of Social Services, in conjunc tion with the State Food Assistance Qffice has targeted the elderly here for special attention in the Food Stamp Program.
