Pagtt-TlM PtrqUimans Weakly, Hertford, N.C., Thursday, May 19. w? WELCOME, STUDENTS! Carol SE inner, Per quimans County High School Guidance Club presi dent, offers a word of welcome to rising freshmen as they participate in an orientation session held at the school Wednesday, May XL The program was spon- ? sored by the PCHS ,CSr 1 Wjj!l By NELLIE M. SANDERS Director, Pettigrew Regional Library Watch Program Approved HOOTS . NORTH CAROLINA AUTHORS - Books by North Carolina authors form an important part of the collection for the Pettigrew Regional Library. Each of the libraries in the region (Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library in Edenton, Perquimans County Library in Hertford, Tyrrell County Public Library in Columbia, and Washington County Library in Plymouth) has a special section devoted to books about North Carolina (regardless of the birthplace of the author) which contains histories and genealogical . materials among other subjects. But some books are not only about North Carolina they were written by natives and that makes them extra special. The former chairman of the Trustees Section of the North Carolina Library Association, Patsy Ginns, is the proud author (compiler?) of the latest addition to our North Carolina collection. Using a tape recorder, she interviewed older residents of rural areas all across the state, asking them to recall their past. The results of these interviews, edited only slightly, form a fascinating picture of "the old days." The title of the Ginns book is ROUGH WEATHER MAKES GOOD TIMBER and the contribution it makes to preserving the flavor of our rural heritage is significant one. The contents are arranged in short, pithy sequences by subjects such as The Land, Home Life, Food, Work, Cash Crops, Happy Times, Hard Times, School and Church, Social Customs, Travel, Stories and Legends. Many of the interviews are printed like poetry and the book is beauti fully illustrated with pen and ink drawings by J.L. Osborne, Jr. SCREECHES NORTH CAROLINA POETS It is not so grand as the Ginns book which is handsomely printed by the University of North Carolina Press, but we acquired another book by a native North Carolinian this week. One of our most faithful library users presented us with a slim volume of poetry by R. Wayne Gray from Wanchese. LOVE SONGS FROM THE OUTER BANKS was printed by Times Printing Company in Manteo, a bit closer to home than Chapel Hill. It is also tastefully illustrated by sketches. But the thing that touched me most is the afterword: "The cover design and illustrations were done by a dear friend of mine, Peggy Horner, who also happens to be my mother-in-law." RALEIGH, May 6 - The North Carolina Board of Transportation has ap proved a recommendation to cooperate with local law enforcement officials and with Governor James B. Hunt Jr.'s Office of Citizen Affairs in coordinating a statewide Community Watch Program. ' Community Watch Programs, organized by Governor Hunt when he was Lieutenant Governor, are already underway in many communities across the State. The crime prevention system involves observing, reporting and when necessary patrolling a community, in a serious effort to stop theft and breaking and entering crimes. As part of a statewide Community .Watch Program, local ' law en forcement officials and citizens are-working together to, place "Com munity Watch" signs at strategic locations around participating neighborhoods or communities to identify that area to potential law breakers as being Von guard" against crime. In order that Community Watch signs be more visible and have greater exposure, the Board of Transportation agreed to allow the signs on : state highway rights-of-way under certain conditions. For one, the desired location, if on state highway right-of-way, must be ap proved by an area engineer. Also, Communtiy watch signs will not be allowed within fully controlled ac cess limits of highway right-of-way. ,. Another condition provides that the design and size of the signs must be approved by the trans portation department and to the extent feasible, a standard design ' must be " used. A final condition states" that the costs, installation and maintenance, for the Community Watch signs shall be the responsibility of . those requesting permission to place the signs on high way right-of-way. If the signs ' are not properly maintained, the Depart ment reserves the right to remove them. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Murray and family and Mrs. - Bernice Glover and family attended the graduation of Miss Betty Murray at UNC Chapel Hill on Sunday.
