Director, Pettigrew Regional Library HOOTS READING REINFORCERS The sheer pleasure of ' eading should be sufficient reward to encourage young people to spend their leisure time with books. But it doesn't always work that way. Therefore librarians in this area are taking a leaf from the behavior-modification school of psychology by offering 4,reinforcers" for desirable achievements. ' , - - Call it by any other name bribes, rewards, incentives the idea is the same: demonstrate approval of certain ac tivities and you reinforce those activities. In many ways, summer reading clubs at the public libraries have put this theory to the test and it works. , This year, the libraries in the Pettigrew Region (Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library in Edenton, Per quimans County Library Library in Columbia and Washington . County Library in Plymouth) are adding another ingredient to the reinforcer formula: food. With the ciuuuaiasuv cuuperuuun ui me naruees flamourger people, tokens which are redeemable for burgers of various sizes will be awarded for reading specific numbers of books. . Tlll -. .1 i 1 l . ... . ' iciaus ui me summer reading ciuo pians win oe an nounced shortly by Mary Eileen Bieler, the coordinator foil ' children's services in the Pettigrew Region. A starting date of June 15 has been set and the upper age limit decided upon (high school students will be excluded). , . .. . . ' SCREECHES C-,rl-: RAINED OUT The past week brough some mucW needed rain (almost too much of it! ) which caused a few in conveniences. The final golf tournament of the Roanoke Ladies Association, planned for May 24 in Edenton, had to be postponed a week. And the outdoor staff meeting planned for Pettigrew State Park had to be switched to the Visitor's Center for the Somerset Place. But in both cases, those in volved made the best of It. 4 , The staff meeting profited from the closeness (psychologically as well as spatially) and the sun came but long enough for participants to enjoy a picnic lunch. The highlight of the day was the presentation of gifts to two of the most popular staff members a housewarming gift to Evelyn Neptune and wedding presents to Sheila Furlough along with best wishes.
