GEORGE BRADLEY FIELDS For Your Information Dear friends, A funeral with the body present gives identity and purpose to the service. A climate for mourning exists which allows a natural sharing of sorrow. Without the body, the ex pression of sympathy may be con strained and less natural for many people, and makes the acceptance of the reality of death more difficult. It teaches important lessons about the power and love of God, who is able to deliver from the cruel taskmaster, Satan. Exodus 11:14 By means of ten devesting plagues God sought to teach pharoah the futility of trusting other gods. God had in dicated that several Judgments would befall the Egyptians prior to their emancipation of the Israelites, but he had not revealed their exact number. For the first time Moses was able to see that the end of the plagues was drawing near, and that a final plague would be the means by which the deliverance of the Israelites from bondage would be accomplished. The last of the ten devesting plagues was the death of all the firstborn Egyptians. God sent the plague to get Pharaoh and the Egyptains to recognize him as the true God. It is practically impossible for us to imagine the grief which characterized the homes the night the firstborn were put to death. In oriental society the firstborn male child was hier to a double portion of the father's inheritance. He would also succeed his father on the throne if the father occupied such a position. The death of the firstborne was including animals, too. The destruction was strictly a supernatural operation Exodus 13:17-22 God does some things suddenly, but others he does slowly, deliberately, and progressively. Sometimes the latter are necessary to discipline people. When the children of Israel, who had spent many long years in slavery, came out of Egypt and started on their journey to the Promised Land, God did not lead them by the way of the Philistines, which was the shortest and most direct way. Instead, God led them through the wilderness. Having spent so much time in bondage, and being told what to do under the different cir cumstances, they were not prepared to make major deci sions. Had he led them into contact with the Philistines, the Israelites would not have been prepared. So, God led them , by another and longer route a way on which for some time they would not encounter any enemies who would over come them. It would have been tragic if they had become in volved in war before they learned to trust God implicitly and to be faithful to him in everything. Another reason God led the Israelites through the wilderness was to display His supernatural power by bringing them safely through the Red Sea, by drowning Pharoah and his hosts in the waters of that sea, and by organizing them into a nation before they reached their destination. Thus far they had not learned to endure hardship, which was important for those who would live nobly, courageously, and victoriously. One of the great blessings they received was the com panionship of God as He led them. They were the recipients of the necessary provisions as they journeyed with God. For them God provided manna from heaven and water from the rock. ";".".'" , The way we travel through this earthly life is the one God chooses for us. It is wonderful to know as we travel the way that God chooses for us, we shall enjoy His presence, His protection, and His provision.
