Spivey, wife of ;a Quaker minister and mother of two young .children, is also an artist and her senior art exhibit .went up June 20 at the .Walter N. Ridley University Center on Elizabeth City .State University's campus. V It has been a task indeed -for her to gain her art .degree. Starting as a young girl with food color to paint scenes in her own Asheboro, N.C. backyard to selling a new portable TV after mar iriage to pay for a home study course, rewards of ' fortitude are coming forth. : The earliest recollection Mrs. Spivey has of her in ' terest in art was at age 14. f'I remember very vividly, -On a Sunday afternoon ' sketching with pencil on a Sheet of notebook paper, a - peaceful scene of. water, . a wniow tree ana a cnurcn ysteeple. I painted it with t food coloring which was probably the only medium ' at my disposal. I remember ;; thinking how really good it was. Her parents gave her an off-shoot drawing kit that paralelled the television program for Christmas. '; As a senior in high school, i she joined the school ; "newspaper staff as artist. She 1 became busy with working ";and housekeeping and had -'little time for art. t According to Mrs. Spivey, - she had been married about a year when her husband '"convinced her to enroll in a k Sketching class at a local technical institute. This was -followed by two painting ! courses, and the home study '-course, and everyone was ;j 'happy. However, midway t through the home study ven--ture, the couple's first child K arrived. "After that I could ; " never seem to find time to ! get back to it," she said. l-l In the meantime, her hus The Board of Commissioners of Perquimans County will accept sealed bids for fuel oil to be used by County Agencies for fiscal year 1977-78, beginning in August, 1977 and end ing June 30, 1 978. (ECSU photo by Francine Sawyer) band enrolled in college and the following eight years were filled with being a mother, a wife, a working woman, and housekeeper. No time for art. After the birth of a second child in September of 1973 Mrs. Spivey decided to take an art course to "get out of the house." She took a course for only several hours a week from Mrs. Maxine Ferrell. The "old spark," as she terms it, returned and she entered a work in the Pasquotank Arts Council show and won a ribbon. She took several more courses and with her hus band's encouragement she entered Elizabeth City State University in the fall of 1974. She has been an honor stu dent from the onset. During her studies at ECSU, she and Wilbur Davis Jr., were co-sculptors o( "The Hands of Liberty," a bronze sculptural monu ment carved under the guidance of Dr. Vincent J. deGregorio, chairman of the university's art department. The piece' is placed on the Pasquotank County cour thouse lawn and is also photographed on the cover of the Norfolk & Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Company phone directory. BPW Plans Year The Hertford Business and Professional Womens (BPW) club held its regular meeting Thursday night at the home of Mrs. Roxanna Jackson. Miss Linda Grieve, program chairman, gave the program on a State Con vention, highlights. She brought out the fact that Mrs. Kathy Newbern, Club Young Careerist candidate, placed third in the state among strong competition. Mrs. Bonnie White, presi dent, presided during the business session. A new member, Mrs. Becky G. Perry, was welcomed to the club. Miss Hulda Wood, Scholarship chairman an nounced the Health Careers scholarship had been A-fiMr. Mrs. Spivey 's first in terest is painting and especially acrylics. Her second interest is sculpture. She is also fascinated with realism. Sometimes she paints on a larger than life scale. "So many people walk through life never see ing the beauties around them, a drop of dew, a leaf, a flower... by painting things larger than they actually are, I hope that I can awaken an appreciation in people." Dr. deGregorio; who has observed Mrs. Spivey's development during a period of several years, has said of her work ..."Love of sound drawing, which is a very demanding discipline, has caused her to become impatient with facile solu tions, regardless of art media." He adds, "She gives her art a straightfor ward approach, reflective of her resolute attitude toward "a work." ' - Mrs. Spivey has IS pieces of work on display with 10 works for sale. The public is invited to view the exhibition. Another exhibition goes up at Peoples Bank & Trust Company in downtown Hert ford from July 18 through July 29. This display is also sponsored by the Depart ment of Art at ECSU. awarded to Miss Beth Winslow. The budget for the coming year was presented with the following ap proved: sponsor girl scouts, ice cream social July 4, An nual Christmas Tree Lighting, sponsor Metric System Class for County, present play, "Tom Thumb Wedding in Mother Goose Land" for children. A social followed the clos ing of the meeting and delicious refreshments were served by the hostess. FROM GRIFTON Roland and Louise Smith from Grifton, . Looking Backward JUNE 1939 By VIRGINIA WHITE TRANSEAU 7 PERQUIMANS ONE OF 24 COUNTIES WITHOUT HEALTH DEPARTMENT: One of 24 counties in North Carolina which does not have a health unit, citizens of Perquimans County should investigate the ser vices being rendered in counties and communities where there is a public health department.. .as well as looking into the cost. The present allocation of funds to health organizations from the various agencies figures out like this: local, 68.7 per cent; state, 7.4 per cent; federal, 18.5 per cent; other agencies, 5.4 per cent. HERTFORD BUSINESS HOUSES WILL CLOSE ON JULY FOURTH: It is in dicated that all principle stores and business houses in Hertford will be closed on the Fourth of July. No plant are laid for observance of the Fourth in Hertford, and the day will probably be spent visiting nearby beaches or on the river fishing. CLAUDE WILLIAMS HAS FIRST COTTON BLOOM : Following - an established custom, the year's free subscription to The Perquimans Weekly tor the first cotton blossom of the season, has been awarded. Claude Williams brought the first blossom of the 1939 season to the office of The Weekly Tuesday afternoon. He found it that morning on his farm on Route 3.
