Jones today called upon Presi dent Carter to support the adoption of a "food for work" proposal, under which certain food stamp recipients would be required to perform public service work in exchange for food stamps. "I am convinced that 'food for work' is an idea whose time has come," Said Jones. "It offers the new resources to State and local governments at no additional cost, to assist them in improving their level of service to the community. It also expressly protects regular public sector jobs ahd job opportunities. But the biggest benefit," Jones continued, "is that 'food for work will stimulate work incentives and increase the career potential of able-bodied food stamp recipients who have been unable to find adequate employment on their own. In the process, it will go a long way in restoring public confidence in the Food Stamp Program and bringing self esteem to recipients. "There is no question that private sector employment is preferable to public sector work," he said. "But there are more job seekers than jobs." Food for Work "can help deliver useful jobs, while a permanent solution to the unemployment problem is being developed." Albemarle Academy Honors Lists Donald J.
