There are 82 miles of un paved secondary roads in Perquimans County, while the total number of unpaved state maintained secondary Farm Safety Week Begun CHICAGO President Jimmy Carter has pro claimed July 25 through 31 as National Farm Safety Week. The theme of this year's observance, "Safety Is A Good Investment," was designated by the National Safety Council and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, joint sponsors of this annual event., This is the 34th con secutive year in which the nation has paid special tribute to farm safety as a means of reducing costly ac- cidits that cut agricultural ' productivity and bring great personal loss to thousands of farm families annually. Accidents in 1976 claimed the lives of approximately 5.400 farm residents and " caused about 500,000 disabl " ing injuries, according to preliminary estimates from the National Safety Council. About 1.900 deaths and 180,000 disabling injuries were classified as farm work deaths and injuries to farm and ranch residents accounted for 1,300 and 130,000 of these totals, . respectively.
