Thursday, September 1, 1977 Police Dept Files Report The Hertford Police Department filed the following report Tuesday morning of recent activity : ARRESTS Columbus L. Kellam Jr. of 1814 Barre St. Norfolk, was arrested by Chief Her ritt on Sept. 4 at 11:48 a.m. for driving without an operator license and speeding 65 m.p.h. in a 55 m.p.h. zone. He was released on a $52 cash bond, Joseph Mendal Jolly Sr. of 214 Church St. was ar rested Sept. 5, at 3:30 p.m. by Chief Merritt for Posses sion of non tax paid whiskey and assault on a female. He was placed in the Albemarle District Jail under a $300 Bond. CITATIONS Keith Melvin Nowell of Rt. 1, Belvidere, was charged with speeding 39 m.p.h. in a 25 m.p.h. zone by Chief Merritt on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on Church St. James Preston Morgan of Rt. 3, Hertford was cited by Chief Merritt for speeding 43 m.p.h. in a 25 m.p.h. zone on Church St. Sept. 4 at 2:05 p.m. Ralph Fay Nixon of Rt.l, Tyner, was cited by Chief Merritt for exceeding a safe speed on Church St. Sept. 4, at3:35p.m. Delaney Gray Jethro of Narrons Trailer Park Elizabeth City, was cited by Officer J.R. Logan for speeding 64 m.p.h. in a 55 m.p.h. zone on Sept. 4 at 5:13 p.m. MONTHLY REPORT The Hertford Police Department has issued the following report for arrests and activities for August: Arrests disorderly con duct, 1; speeders, 6; assaults, 3; operating intox icated, 1; Larceny, 1; total arrests and citations, 30. Activities accidents in vestigated, 5; larceny of automobiles, 2 ; automobiles recovered, 1; funerals worked, 5; courtesies extended, 103; doors foung unlocked, 1; fire calls answered, 3; radio calls, 815; citations issued, 18; lights reported out, 4; subpoenas served, 38; bikes recovered, 1; and criminal summons served, 2. Civic Calendar . THURSDAY, SEPT. 8 The Perquimans County Jaycees will meet. FRIDAY, SEPT. 9 Bethel Homemakers Club meets. SATURDAY, SEPT. 10 The Hertford Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW) will sponsor a yard sale on the vacant lot across from the old Agricultural Building on Grubb Street be tween the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. . Gov. meet at 10 a.m. Home movies by Maude Ellis will be shown at the Per quimans High School cafeteria beginning at 7:30 p.m. Ad mission price is a $1 donation to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Belvidere-Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Department. TUESDAY, SEPT. 14 Hertford Rotary Club meets at 6:30 p.m. ;, The Perquimans County Horse and Pony Club meets. Perquimans Masonic Lodge will meet. Town Receives HUD Grant Congressman Walter B. Jones today announced the ap proval by the Department of Housing and Urban Develop ment of the following grants : To the Town of Hertford, a Community Development Block Grant of $439,700 for acquisition and disposition, site improvements, site clearance and demolition, rehabilita tion loans and grants, and relocation. To the Town of Edenton, a Community Development Block Grant of $445,000 to be used for housing rehabilitation programs, acquisition and clearance, and public works. To the Town of Williamston, Housing Authority a Section 8 Housing Assistance payments for 50 units of Section 8 existing housing. Jones Concerned Over Af latoxin First District Con gressman Walter B. Jones recently expressed great concern over an outbreak of ' anatoxin across much of eastern North Carolina ap pearing in the corn crop. This outbreak has resulted in virtually a moratorium being imposed on the pur chase of corn by grain dealers until such time as the Food and Drug Ad ministration sets specific standards as to a reasonable and safe tolerance which will protect the health and welfare of citizens and also the beef, swine and poultry industry. In a telegram to Commis sioner Donald Kennedy of the Food and Drug Ad ministration on Sept. 1, Congressman Jones stressed the extreme urgency of quick action and requested that the FDA grant a greater tolerance for afl' toxin so that grain purchases can resume. Kiss Your Baby Week Proclaimed : ? Bill Cox, Mayor of Hert ford, has released a pro clamation declaring the weeks of September 5-16 as Kiss Your Baby Week throughout the town.
