The employee reported that he heard the register open, saw a black male with his hand in the register, then chased him out of the back of the building, but lost him in the vicinity of the Hertford Medical Clinic. Police Chief Marshall Merritt stated that the case was still under investigation and that the department was following up on several good leads. CITATIONS Dewey St. Clare Newby of Rt. 1, Box 128-C, Hert ford, was charged with speeding at a rate of 40 mph in a 25 mph zone by Chief Merritt on Sept. 18 at 12:10 p.m. on Church St. Joshua Crandall of Market St., Hertford, was cited for failing to register his vehicle with the Depart ment of Motor Vehicles by Officer J.R. The incident was discovered at 3:55 a.m. by Officer Boyce who reported that someone had broken the glass out of the station's front door, went inside and took approxi mately $15 from the cash register along with a cigar box. Chief Merritt stated that the case is still under investigation. ' i Another breaking and entering occurred at the Pyrofax Gas Co. on Eden ton Road St. in Hertford Sept. 14. Officer Boyce, who discovered the break-in around 5 a.m., said that a , window had been broken on the south side of the building in order to gain en try. No money was taken due to the company's policy of not leaving daily receipts of cash in the building over night. Chief Merritt, who assisted Officer Boyce, praised the management for such a policy and ad vised other businesses to follow suit. Merritt theorized that the break-in was allegedly the work of juveniles looking for money only. Towe Motor Co., located on Dobb St. in Hertford, was the scene of yet another break-in recently, this one occurring on Sept. 15. Clifford Towe, employee, reported the in cident to Officer R.L. Scotties Store, located at the Harris Shopping Center in Hertford, was also recent victim to breaking, enter ing and larceny. The Sept. 18 incident was in vestigated by Officer J.R. Logan who reported that someone broke the bathroom window in the rear of the building, entered, and took approx imately $50 in cash from the previous day's receipts. Chief Merritt stated that the method of entry was similar in all four cases and that the investigation being conducted by the Hertford Police Department will be concentrated on, but not limited to, known juvenile offenders with a similar M.O. observing any suspicious activity report it promptly to the department.
