Obituaries
MRS. LILLIAN W. APPLEGATE
' Mrs. Lillian Eugenia Weller Applegate, 81, of Hertford,
died Saturday in the Chowan Hospital. A native of Trenton,
N. J. she was the widow of Edward Golding Applegate and
daughter of the late Franklin and Mrs. Florence Moore
Weller. : -r-.'-,
She was a member of the Hertford United Methodist
Church, the Edenton Tea Party Chapter Daughters of the
American Revolution and the Huguenot Society of N.J.
Surviving are a son, Thomas A. Applegate of Ft. Myers,
Fla. ; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Cedar
wood Cemetery in Hertfod by the Rev. Amos Stone, pastor
of the Hertford United Methodist Church.
Swindell Funeral Home was in charge of the Ar
rangements. -
MRS. SARAH MAE FELTON
. Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Mae Felton were held
Sept. 25 at New Bethel Baptist Church by Rev. S.L.
Lawrence and Rev. J.H. London.
Mrs. Felton, 41, was the daughter of Mrs. Eliza Jones and
the late Willie Jones.
A native of Perquimans County, she was a member of the
New Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include her widower, Herman Felton Sr. of
Hertford; her mother, Mrs. Eliza Jones Williams of
Chesapeake, Va.; two daughters, Miss Kindra Felton and
Miss Lennette Felton of the home; five sons, Abner
Harvey, Herman Felton Jr., Kimbley Harvey and Lenay
Felton of Hertford, and Andy Harvey of Boston, Mass. ; five
brothers, Percy Clifton Jones of Edenton, Willie Jones and
Ray Jones of Hempstead, Long Island, Bill Jones of Staten
Island, N.Y., and George Wynn of Long Beach, N.Y.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Rowsom
Funeral Home of Edenton.

I- Mrs. Lucille Fleetwood Williams, 72, of Rt. 1, Hertford,
died Friday at 12:45 p.m. in the Chowan Hospital following
ian illness of six months.
( A Perquimans County Native, she was the daughter of
the late Lee and Mrs. Lillie Elliott Fleetwood. Before her
'retirement, she worked as a machine operator for Don
'Juan Manufacturing Co.
. She was a Baptist.
; Surviving are her husband, William Earl Williams; a
sister Mrs. Mattie Barwick, of Miami, Fla.; and a half-brother,
Cecil Meyers of Chesapeake, Va

JUDGING AND FORGIVING
John 8:3-7
While Christ was teaching in the temple of Jerusalem,
the scribes and Pharisees, who repeatedly sought op
portunities to take advantage of and to entrap Christ,
.brazenly barged into His presence, bringing to Him a
woman whom they had snoopingly caught in the act of
adultery. According to the law of Moses (Deuteronomy
22:23-24) such a person should be stoned when her sin was
attested to by two persons. These critics asked Christ if the
law of Moses should be administered in this case or would
He propose another rule for them to go by? Really they
were not concerned about this sinful woman, but they were
vitally interested in finding some basis on which to bring
both religious and civil charges against Christ. In the event
that He should say that she should not be stoned to death,
they would accuse Him of being an enemy of Moses and
charge Him with breaking his law, which prescribed the
death penalty. If Christ should agree with Moses and
declare that the woman should be executed, He would them
be in trouble with the Roman government, whose officials
had the sole authority to impose the death penalty.
Christ did not reply to His hypocritical questioner, but
stooped and wrote with His finger in the sandy soil. Since
nobody knows what He wrote, any speculation on our part
is unnecessary and unwise. Undaunted by His ignoring
them, and thinking that perhaps they bad puzzled and
perplexed Him to such an extent that He did not know what
to say, His questioner pressed for an immediate answer.
Knowing that they wanted to murder the Messiah, Christ
exposed the unfitness of these men by sitting in judgment
on her. He confounded them by saying, "He that is without
sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." How ap
propriate that remark was! Christ was willing for any of
them who had never committed adultery in their hearts to
stone the woman for her sin. Again, Christ stooped and
wrote on the ground. All of the thoroughly humiliated
critics withdrew themselves with the least possible notice
from others.
Luke 6:37-42
Christ devoted a part of the Sermon on the Mount to those
who were addicted to the sinful habit of judging, criticizing,
and condemning others. Unfortunately, some seemingly
have nothing else to talk about except their acquaintances.
They discuss their conduct, accuse them of having un
worthy motives, repeat slanderous statements about them,
and derive satisfaction from condemning them. Such an
uncharitable and censorious spirit hinders Christian
fellowship and hampers the work of Christ. Therefore,
Christ commanded His followers to abstain from in
dulgence in this sin.
Looking for faults and seeking to tear down others in
order to build up self arrests one's intellectual and spiritual
development and is a sure way of ministering to one's own
wretchedness and of destroying one's usefulness. As you
judge others, you will be judged. The measure you give will
be the measure of your own conduct. Life moves in a circle,
and what we give to others we get from them. We want
others to take a generous interest in us, to look for the best
in us, and to help lighten our loads. Therefore, let us take a
genuine interest in others, look for the best in them, and
strive to lighten their burdens. In other words, treat the
other fellow as you would want to be treated under similar:
circumstances. '
And remember that a faultfinder is never a reliable fact
finder; To seek the worst in others is to become blind to the"
best that is in them. Searching for blemishes in others
causes one to treat trivial matters as though they were of
major importance. ' '
If you would, overcome this hypocritical and censorious
spirit, recognize the sinfulness of it, repent of it, and rely:
upon God's grace to help you overcome it.
