Rescue Squad News & Notes By RALPH BARR Emergency Medical Technician I know that many of our citizens here in Perquimans County have observed some of the Rescue Squad members wearing an emblem on their uniform shirts that has EMT on it. I have had a few people ask what it means and I ex plain it in terms of hours of training and dedication. I recently came upon an article in Emergency Magazine which I believe explains it better than I ever could. WHAT IS AN EMT? The letters EMT stand for Emergency Medical Tech nician. An EMT is a professional who has been extensively trained, certified and registered by the State to administer expert emergency medical care in the field, irregardless of the circumstances of the accident or sudden illness. To put it more directly, the EMT is the individual you observe entering into the twisted and tangled remains of what once was an automobile (on a rainswept highway at two o'clock in the morning), in an effort to save the lives and reduce the injuries of the victims involved, until they can be safely turned over to the nearest hospital emergency room. The EMT is the same professional you see bent over the stricken victim of a heart attack, administering mouth-to mouth resuscitation and closed heart compression in a dedicated effort to save a life. You'll rarely meet the EMT under normal cir cumstances. You'll only see him in action in situations you wish would never have happened. He is summoned to per form his job in a41 kinds of weather, at any time of the day or night, any place, for human beings of all colors and races. It can be dry, wet, muddy or generally poor, it doesn't matter. The accident site may be a paved highway, a quarry pit filled with water, the beach, a river, a canal, a crushed vehicle, a crashed airplane, a wrecked passenger train, a tornado or hurricane swept area, a collapsed building, a flash flood area, the scene of a large fire or even the bedroom or bathroom of a modern, beautiful home. It really doesn't matter, the EMT will be there. The EMT is trained to be calm, even under the most try ing circumstances. He is trained to perform expert emergency medical care without the benefit of a modern, well-equipped emergency room at his fingertips and without the help of a battery of nurses and orderlies to per form support as he administers lifesaving care. CARD of THANKS We, the family of Lucille Williams, wish to take this means to express our sincere thanks to each and everyone who remem bered us in any way during the illness and death of our loved one.
