Independents vs. All Stars Civic League Meets The regular monthly meeting of the Holiday Island Civic League was held Oct. 2 with Joe Segar presiding. Segar reported that the community's rescue squad ambulance has been cer ; tified by the efforts of Bob ?Richard and Cecil Timms with cooperation from the members of the Per quimans County Rescue Squad. Timms reported that eight Islanders are enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training course now in pro gress at the Perquimans County Rescue Squad Building. Chairman Segar pre sented a program for fund raising for the coming year. One idea presented was a sailboat regatta with an open class boat race with a Hobby Cats class as the main event. A committee was suggested to look into this suggestion. Mable Segar, Betty God win and Barbara Everett were named to a baked goods sale committee for the sale to be held during the Turkey Shoot in November. Much discussion was also heard on security at Holiday Island and the lack of police protection in the area. It was pointed out that the only law enforce ment Holiday Island has is that afforded by the Perquimans County Sher iff's Department. The group agreed that this was not adequate and Timms WE CLEAN AND REPAIR RADIATORS. TURN BRAKE DRUMS. DIXIE AUTO SUPPLY HERTFORD. N.C. PHONE 426 5716 ? MOORE'S HOUSE PAINT Harris Plumbing t Building Supplies reported that there is a security patrol that covers the island every night. Recommendations will be made to the Board of Governors as to the effec tiveness of the patrol. Ted Weeks, Holiday Island Board Member, in formed those present that the next regular Board meeting will be held Oct. 16 and that any or all in terested property owners are welcome to attend. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Permit Needed IF YOU BURN! DON'T FORGET YOUR PERMIT! Brush Burning Permit Law #14-139 requires that persons starting fires within 500 feet of areas under protection of the State Forest Service must have a permit from the State Forester or one of his duly authorized agents. This permit is required all year and there is no charge for it. This section shall not apply to any fires started or caused to be started, within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling house, if such fires shall be confined within an enclosure from watch is being maintained and which is provided with ade quate fire protection equip ment. However, a burning per mit does not relieve you of complying to local Health Department and Board of Air and Water Resources standards. The burning permit law is not intended to be an in convenience to the public but merely a fire preven tion tool. The benefits are (1) the Forest Service will know where burning is tak ing place and when, (2) what type and how much burning activity, (3) if precautionary actions are being taken, and (4) how to get in touch with permittee in the event of hazardous fire weather if burning is cancelled. The burning permit is one of many indicators a Forest Ranger must use in plan ning his forest fire control program to prevent forest fires and keep them small when they occur. CHECK, THEN CALL Avoid calling for ap pliance servicing need lessly. Do some routine checking first: Is the cord plugged in? Pilot light on? Controls set correctly? Has dust or dirt built up around vents or grills? Are water faucets on? Has a fuse blown or is the circuit breaker open? And always consult your owner's manual.
